Title: Whats for supper
Post by: FinsnFur on May 12, 2017, 08:18:50 PM
Went down to the river tonight to get my fishing fix and ended up catching a beautiful Sauger. I figured I'd catch a few smallmouth bass and go home and relax. Ended up catching me some supper

Is that a five gallon bud light?  If so     great catch. :bowingsmilie:
Do them shrooms quit moving before eating?

All looks good.

I shoulda saved some of it. That might be the only fish I catch all weekend. The river is dropping an average of 6 inches a day :doh2:
Nothing bites when they do that. Well except for fishing...fishing bites lol

Everything is flooded here and it's only 46°

Why is that ^^^?

When the water goes down fast, it puts the fish into a panic mode it seems and they dont bite. It will even effect the spawn, cut it short, change the period etc. Slow changes are fairly easy to deal with, and slow rising water especially. Slow rising water will open up new feeding areas for the fish.
But dropping water put pressure on them and changes many things about their behavior and habits.

The ponds and lakes that Barry fishes in don't have this problem.  I also didn't notice any difference at Long John Silver's seafood.

No...ponds and lakes arent effected nearly as bad. They dont travel across large spans of real estate collecting run-off like rivers and streams do.

Maybe with our river dropping so rapidly here also,, that's why I had to wait so long for my fish burritos from Hardees.  :wo: :wo:

I remember as a youngster when the river would drop quickly after the snow melts that we couldn't catch much for fish either. Just figured it was that the water was too cold from the melting snow entering the river. Maybe it wasn't that after all. I can see where the fish would feel the difference as the water level dropped quickly & they would shut down.

Jim-- Do you feel the fish in the Mississippi are affected by weather? Here in our lakes I always fished in front of the storm,, with very good results,, if there was going to be a big change in the barometric pressure. Just wondering if you noticed that in the big river.

After the rains we had a week or so ago I saw some kids out fishing (without poles) yesterday.  They were on the north side of 424 and the river is on the south side.  When the flooding hit there were fish that swam across the road in about a foot of water and are now trapped on the other side.  The kids won't get them all and it will smell pretty bad in another couple of weeks when all the water is gone.

Those fish were probably heading up river to spawn Jerry, pretty common.

HaMeR, absolutely. I always play the weather. Bright sunny clear days, you can still catch fish, but nothing like a cloudy day or before a storm. Bright, sunny, clear days, put the fish into cover. Thats when I fish grass lines, stumps, or downed trees. These types of days are usually associated with high or rising barometric pressure too. It's like the fish having a headache. Too much pressure.
Cold days I fish the shallows. They want warmth and the shallow water warms much faster.
Cloudy, overcast days, or before a storm is a free for all. They are on the prowl, the barometric pressure is usually dropping (big bonus) and they always bite. And especially when it's raining.
Windy days I try to find calm water out of the wind. River fish dont like the wind either. It throws off their ability to detect vibration. Lake fish just head for deep water when it's windy.
