A skewer.
I suppose it is, in a manner of speaking, but that isn't the correct answer. It is only about ten inches in length. Think mid 1800's.
I was thinking hat pin. :alscalls:
Nope.
Does the "War between the states" ring any bells????
No it doesnt ring any bells but it makes me hungry thinking about shish kabob. :eyebrow:

They woulda been looking for a ride in our sandy country.
A mid 1800's skewer
War between the states reminds me of when I was a bright eyed and bushy tailed 18-year-old shipped to my first duty station in Charleston South Carolina. I went out with my crew to this big country and western bar and soon found myself enamored of this tiny very pretty little blonde girl. I went up to her and asked her to dance and she looked at me and said where are you from sir and I said from New England, Vermont to be specific and she said I am from Fayetteville North Carolina and where I come from damn Yankee is one word! :alscalls:

This is a cannon vent pick. Used to clear the vent and also to pierce the bag of black powder charge when preparing to fire the cannon. Most cannon loads consisted of the powder charge attached to the projectile.
My vent pics are brass
