Title: LITTLE HELP
Post by: George Ackley on May 31, 2007, 06:19:09 PM
Let me start by saying I am a dial up :argh:
On a couple of sights out of the 20 or so I hang around on I have trouble getting in to threads and replying to threads .
Yes this is one or the 2 I have trouble with
I can log on fine,
The home page shows right up in seconds ,
But when I go into a thread, it takes a long time to open and to reply to one,, is even worse .

I no I am slow because of my dial up, But i only am having probloms here and down south hunting

Can I be helped

thanks
George

I have simillar problems as you do.

I am on dial  up at home and it takes forever to load the pages and a reply is not as easy as it should be.

Maybe someone will have an answer for us.

How long has this been going on George and Slag?

Just guessing, I'm thinking there's a router down somewhere between you and our server, meaning the server cant get you the data fast enough or at all.
The reason I think that is because I been on here all day along with many others and yet I got one guy on Alabama that can't get the site up. BobD

Have either of you tried pinging the server?

Oh thats real pretty talk Jim ! Cant believe you would ping the server. :roflmao: :roflmao: Is that the same as tipping?

:roflmao: Only you Mallard....only you.  :roflmao:

PING, simply means Packet Internet Groper.
It lets you check the speed of Packet data sent and received by sending out a specific number of packets and receives it back.
The transaction is timed in milliseconds.
The higher this time is the longer it has taken the packets to be received, the slower the site will appear to you. Depending on where the trouble lies, unless there's a router down between the user and the server, high ping times are normally associated with the users Internet provider.

What a router? A router is a device that directs the data from the server to your computer so you can view it. Unfortunately the data is not sent as the crow flys. It travels many different destinations before it gets to where it's going and not every users gets his from the same path.

AWH...is gonna love this.  :roflmao:

Ya dang skippy I am. Ya computer geek.

Fellows, to ping you need to click on the start button. Then go up and click on the run button. Once the box pops up type CMD and hit enter. Once the black screen comes up, type ping [space] then the IP address of the router. Then hit enter. It will then give you the info. Should be 4 line items stating something like the crap Jim wrote above or if theres a problem it will give 1-4 time outs. You'll have to ask the computer geek for the IP address.....or your internet provider.

How's that Jim-bo, pretty good guess?

LOL! No you hit er right on Danny
That description works on XP machines, I'm unsure about Win98, I think you might need the whole word command.

Either way...if you just ping finsandfur.net, you wont need the IP since we are our own server.

The feedback will be in milliseconds, each line will have a result something like time=59ms
Anything under 200 Milliseconds is normal and the lower the number the faster the packets are coming back.

Anything over 200 usually means trouble, and the higher it goes the slower your connection to us will appear.

If it get's nothing back or gets tired of waiting, yeah it times out.

I tried the ping thing. Results were 108 to 67 milliseconds with an average of 84.

George, Were just that popular I guess..... :roflmao:

Sounds like you need to put a strip of ram in your computer. Very easy to do & I'd be more than happy to walk you through it. Depending on the make and model your looking at around 30 bucks to make your computer act like a new one and open everything faster.

I'm wondering if there's something spanky down south where all this is getting routed through.

It seems all the complaints about slow or white page, are coming from the same tristate area. George where ya from?

After reading your first post Goerge about all the colors changing, I'm thinking you got a whole lot of something else going on.

What OS are you running anyway?

I haven't followed this post lately. I've had a couple problems getting on here too. First time was probably a couple weeks ago, last time was about 3 days ago. It just wouldn't open up. I could whip through anywhere else on my computer, but here. Wasn't sure if the site was down or if it was just something on my end. Anything we can try if it happens again? Something I can check, or do a fix when it happens?  Not trying to take over thread, just have had similar problems. I don't have dial up, I have hi speed, Qwest DSL, whatever it is . I'm not high on the computer geek meter either

I dont know.....I watch the error logs everyday, I monitor the server to make sure an outsider isnt riding it, I've never had an issues what so ever, or seen anything that should cause a disturbance.

I do know that FireFox (http://www.firefox2008.com/us/) works a whole lot faster then Internet Explorer on this site. But it works faster and smoother on any site.
