A week ago I saw three bucks devouring cherries and ran them off, but it was too late to save many cherries.
A fairly big three point was with two smaller bucks. An hour earlier I had noticed that the branches on the biggest cherry tree were loaded with cherries about the size of peanuts, already bowing down limbs. Those three bucks ate 90% of those they could reach, which is a lot of cherries since we pruned the tree down to make it easier to reach and pick cherries. The next night they ate every single rose bud in our biggest bed of roses.
The big buck was belligerent in the cherries, refusing to leave till I walked close to him and threw rocks at him. He walks with a serious limp in his left front leg, and has a grapefruit sized lump where that leg joins his body. He was here last year, a limping fork horn, and is considerably bigger this year. I think I posted here that I suspect our neighbor shot him with a .22 about this time last year. My wife and I were sitting on the patio when we heard a .22 shot, and three minutes later this buck came limping by.
Hopefully it was cherries used in pies and not sweet cherries. I love when my wife brings home Washington bing cherries.
Cherries r expensive in the store! Load that freezer up 😉
I've honestly never had Cherry smoked Venison.
Let me know when the tables turn and we can move this to the Betty Crocker forum :alscalls:
Bang!

The big tree they half stripped is Bing. :argh: That's why I was so ticked at the deer. That tree produces fabulous good tasting big cherries each year. We have a smaller second tree of Bings, two trees of the blond Royal Anns and another red eating cherry I don't know the name of.
I get my little pie cherries from a friend who has the trees.
If you ever get a chance to eat a Lapin cherry, go for it. Lapins look like Bing cherries on steroids: huge and fabulous taste. They were developed in the Okanagan valley in Canada and got to be the ONLY cherry for our family. Wife is a cherry fanatic and she loves them. Apparently due to some ag business patent, nobody in the US is growing them-- yet.
I wonder if I have had Lapin and didn't know it. From time to time we have had some 'larger than normal' Bing cherries which makes me wonder. Till I am sure I will just have to keep eating Bing and Rainier cherries. Just seeing that makes me want some.
P.S. While looking for Lapins, I did find that they are in the states. The Montana Fruit Tree Company sells the trees for $59.99 a tree. Says that they are not too affected by cold weather.
That's good to hear about the Lapins in the US. On refelection, it has been several years since I checked. They are so good that sooner or later somebody in the US is bound to start growing them.
On that note: the best tasting pineapples of any in the world that I have tasted were from West Africa. They are a small variety and they don't seem to keep well, but they taste wonderful. Imagine every shade of good taste in a pineapple with any trace of an acid or side taste removed. Just sweet, smooth, robust pure pineapple. I asked why I'd never tasted one of these in the US or Canada and was told that the big US pineapple companies have managed to keep them out. I'll bet the US companies are working on a way to produce and sell that great flavor.

Photo from last summer of a few cherries from the trees in our yard. Lots of does around all year but the bucks don't come around as much much except when cherries are getting ripe.
I need a cherry tree :eyebrow:
If they grow by you, they'd likely handle our Wisconsin weather dont ya think?

Do you want a cherry tree to eat the cherries or to call in birds so that your Crosman can get some exercise?
(Both)
Speaking of which I have been eyeing a .22 PCP pistol
I don't have a PCP pistol, but I love my PCP rifles.
