Title: Maine Infestation
Post by: Hawks Feather on July 16, 2025, 07:50:25 PM
Becky and I made it to Maine, and I was forced to destroy this infestation creature for supper. It was difficult, but I completed my mission. And yes, that is a full size dinner plate. 😋

Well I was working on scallop draggers so technically we were not supposed to keep lobster but they would come up in the drag and tradition was whoever spotted one first yelled out my lobster and got the lobster. We kept them in 50 gallon barrels right by a scupper so if the Coast Guard or fisheries came around we could dump them over the side real quick, BIG fine if caught. Same thing with cod 😇

Lookin GOOD!

I used to dive for spiney lobster when we lived in southern California.  Biggest one I caught was 13 1/2 lbs. but I saw some up to 25 lbs.  The average table lobster weighed less than a pound, and that one on your plate is considerably bigger than that.  Spiney lobster don't have the big claws.  They sure are good tasting, though if I only could eat one thing from the ocean it would be rock scallops.  Making me hungry for some good seafood this morning!

One of the local grocery stores had live lobsters about a month ago. They were around a pound and were $11.00 per pound, which wasn't bad, except for the size. They were also soft shell which helps keep the price down for the grocery. I had a couple of 2+ pounders in the past and they were not all that great. (Well, really good, but not great.) Keeping them under 2 pounds seems to be the key. My wife gets a 1.25 pound and really likes that size. I had a bite of her lobster and I actually think that my larger one tasted better. But that could all be in my head.

Now that you say grocery store, I can recall when the Big Walmart had them in a clear, water tank in the grocery department a long time ago. Pincers all rubber banded shut, swimming around. I wonder why they quit selling those.

2 pounders were called chicken lobsters. My folks had a little seafood market back in the day we used to get all the seafood directly off the boats in New Bedford Massachusetts. When I was a kid I could steak up a swordfish, shuck an oyster and cut a scallop like a pro.

My better half loves lobster. I can take it or leave it. My favorite seafood is halibut. When in Alaska that's what I look for.

Seafood is like ice cream I've never met any that I didn't like :innocentwhistle:  about the only freshwater fish that I like is native Brooktrout.
