My Punkin Pie and I took the kayaks (Not yak, I was told yaks are animals) out for a morning float. I gotta take Jim's advice and get something better.
Test run with my doggo Willy. This is NOT going to work. As you can see in the pic, the boat is too nose high making control on open water an issue. The Tacoma is not stable at all and when William would move around, it was not good. I tried late with him on the front which made tracking better but we were as nose down as we are nose up in the pic.
Yes, we should have our PFDs on. We don't because as of right now we don't have any that are conducive to wearing on a kayak and paddling. We are on a lake, so no current and we're legal just having a pfd on board. Now that we know that we are going to be doing this regular, we are going shopping for some kayak friendly floatation devices to wear all the time we are on the water.
So, I went shopping the other day and really liked the Nucanoe Frontier 12, Jackson Bite Angler, Bonafide SS127, and RS117. That's the ones they had in stock that I liked. I'm thinking about a Jackson Yupik if I can find one as it would offer a little more room for man's best friend and some gear to do the USFW Ohio River Island Challenge.
Thanks for the advice Jim. I can't wait to get into something nice.

It's beautiful out there. Makes me want to launch mine :yahoo:
Your going to like any one of those kayaks that you listed. They are all really good units.
If you find yourself indecisive...choose the widest one. You'll be glad you did. Especially with Ole Yeller riding along
I think I'm sold on the Yupik. Wide open design, the seat track goes the length of the boat so with another seat it's a tandem. Plenty of room for Willy, a shotgun, and some decoys. I also think the Yupik will be a little nicer on the open water of the Ohio River but still be good for fishing on small lakes. I'm getting stoked and mama is getting worried lol.
It can get out of control but we'll worth it.
