Every year I put a topper on my truck around late September through January and last year through March. I take it off in the spring to haul farm stuff and have access to my gooseneck hitch to haul equipment.
I used some pallet fork extenders to make things to lift the topper.

I can flip over the plywood if I need a flat surface for something, even to lay out some foam and a sleeping bag if needed.

My last two trucks had the short bed. They were ok, but I don't think I'll ever go back to one. 8' is so much better.
