My daughter and I went to "The Jug" for a kayak trip. Still using our Lifetime Wallyworld kayaks, but hopefully will be upgraded by fall.
The Jug is a 3.5 mile stretch of Middle Island creek that loops around and comes back where it started and makes a wonderful little excursion. You literally park in the same place as you launch and recover.
I shared a short video below that the DOT made regarding the Jug. I'm a little ticked at them about it. This project has been talked about for, literally, over 30 years. About 7 years ago I met with DOH, DNR, and some members of the development authority to come up with plans to revamp the dam. 5 years later and nothing had happened even though the DNR and DOH had shared the engineering prints with everyone. Phone calls were going nowhere and voicemails were never returned. It took one of our state senators and a retired wildlife biologist from the DNR to know where to rattle cages. Come to find out that it was stalled at Fish and Wildlife. They were waiting on DOH to give them the go ahead to release the permits but DOH had just been sitting on it. When they realized that the whole community and their representatives were pressing them, they released the job for bid. A year later and they do a video as if they did a great thing when it was pretty much 100% the DNR and a few people/politicians pushing things along. Why was the DOH involved? Believe it or not, the dam and that mud road you see in the first pic is a state road.
Anyway, we are thankful that it finally got finished and provides a local attraction for kayaking, canoeing, and fishing. This was the first time I have been around the Jug in 44 years. Not going to wait that long again going forward.
