Title: Salmon safari: two hours boredom and ten minutes of mayhem
Post by: Okanagan on July 07, 2026, 02:54:03 PM
Short version:  three men in a boat all three hook salmon at virtually the same time in rough water, get blown into hitting a navigation buoy while fighting the fish and land all three salmon.

After two hours of boringly slow fishing, one of my cousins hooked a good fish.  30 seconds later it ran under the boat, surfaced in front of me and appeared to cross my line.  It veered left just as something slammed my lure.  I set the hook into a solid fish and then my cousin said, "I think my fish is fouled in your line."  Duh, with a second's thought that appeared to be what had happened.  So I loosened my drag way back to let my cousin play his fish without interference from my line.

I followed the fight back around the stern of the boat giving line as the fish ran, and then my other cousin said, "Your line is straight out behind the boat and Dave's fish is off to the left." We were fighting two salmon.  Just then my fish made a high leaping arc almost on the beach, way out there backlit against the low angle sun.  I reeled fast... and the line was totally slack.  He'd come off.

I reeled in a bunch of line leisurely, felt a tug and I'll be, the salmon was still on my line!  As I played my fish, one of the cousins reeled up part way and then quickly laid his rod down to grab the net because his brother's salmon was ready to net.  He scooped the salmon, lifted it into the boat and that second his rod started jerking as a salmon grabbed his jig that was hanging over the side.

About then I noticed that the wind was drifting us toward the huge red navigation buoy off the point.  I called it out but the boys were busy.  I should have run the boat but it looked like we were going to clear the buoy.  Oops.  We banged into the buoy, not real hard but daunting.  My bad.

Amazingly, we landed all three fish, all in low to mid teens.  Mine was a ripping jumper.  The good bite lasted and we finished our limit of two apiece.  Only one other boat was out there and they moved in close to us and caught two.

I didn't take any pics of the fracas.  These pics from last year.  I also left out the choreography of our dance around the boat to pass rods over one another, trying to keep clear of each other.  FUN in all caps.

That is quite the story and I am sure that it was exciting. Don't you just 'love' it when you catch a fish and others decided that is where they want to fish! 😤

The fish this year are nearly all short, fat and deep bodied, and really strong.  They seem well fed and healthy. Day before yesterday they got one that weighed 20 lbs. on the biologist fish checker's scale, our best keeper of the year so far.  It's a far cry from the routine 30 pounders of the 1960's but fun fishing and good eating.

One of the fish I took home has outstanding flavor. They are all tasty but this is one of those rare ones that take flavor to the next level.
