A couple of grandsons were here from Pennsylvania. I went along as the shuttle driver when they hiked last weekend through the Eagle Cap wilderness and climbed Eagle Cap peak (9,577 ft.) I dropped them off at their jump off trailhead, drove to where they would come out, and camped for a couple of days waiting. And sampling local cafes.
Joseph, Oregon has a fabulous saloon called the Stubborn Mule, with incredible hamburgers so big and so different from what we think of as a hamburger that it really should be called something else. Superb Reuben as well. Then we did a swing into Montana before heading to salt water home.
They sneaked into some University basketball courts in various places around the PNW. My son and I would drop them off and tell them we would pick them up there or at the police station. They are rabid basketball players and fans, the older one going into his freshman year of college ball.
Before the Eagle Cap they did some hikes to stay in competition condition. One evening here they ran 16 miles of ridgeline trail at timberline. The next evening after my son's work I dropped them not far above sea level and they hiked/ran 8 miles of steep uphill trail to Hurricane Ridge (5,242 ft. elevation) in 3 hours and two minutes. My 52 year old son did both hikes/runs with them. Then the next evening my older son swam over a mile with them in ice cold Lake Crescent.
Smoky air all over the PNW hiding any view of mountains.

Sounds like they had a good time, but I would not want to do what they did. I would like to do your end of it - driving and eating. 🍔
I wonder if you tied a ham to your roof if it would be smoked by the time you got home? :innocentwhistle:
I'm exhausted just THINKING about all that hiking :laf:
