Title: One good weekend! Kinda?
Post by: keekee on September 06, 2006, 02:30:40 AM
Well spent a couple days callen this weekend. We had a cold front come threw with some over cast Sky's and cooler temps! I could not stand it had to get out!

The first day of calling started real well. We were in there before first light and got set up on the edge of a pasture field with wood lots on three sides. This was a dairy farm over in KY. And this would be the first time I had a chance to call this spot. I was testing some new sounds we recorded on the FX3 so as soon as we had enough light to film I set the caller on the Bizzy Bird sound and turned it on. We also had the JIB decoy set out as well.

About 1 min into the stand the camera man picks up a coyote coming from our left. It came out of the wood line and set and watched the decoy. Got up and started to the right. At the same time I had picked one up comming from our left. It was right on the wood line and headed to a small ravine in font of me. I was sure the coyote was going to hit the ravine and run right to me. No dice! It pasted the ravine and was headed for the other coyote that had turned and hit the woods in front of the ravine. I had to take the shot that I had, so I barked to stop the coyote and it went another 20 feet or so and stopped. It was a long shot across the field, I set the cross hairs on the coyote and squeezed the trigger. Clean miss! First shot of the year and first miss of the year! It was a long shot but I still missed!!!

After the stand was over, I walked over to make sure it was a miss and there was the truck in plain view! The way we had walked in I had no idea that they could see the truck! Rookie mistake! Hey its early! And I am good for a few of them every year! The way the road ran we walked in on I didn't even think about them seeing the truck! Oh, well! Got a good miss on film...lol!

Here is the good part!!! We made one more stand and decided to head out to another farm to call. We get back to the gate to leave and it had been locked! We couldn't get out! We had to set till the farmer got home from church and UN lock the gate so we could get out! It was 1:30 before he returned! I was a little up set for sure! Funny thing is the reason he locked the gate before he left was people were going in and stealing his hay while he was gone!!!! He was all but happy about locking us in, and went out of his way to tell us how sorry he was. He didn't see the truck setting there when he left!

The night before I had a set of bolt cutter in the tool box and took them out...lol...This is were they are now!

In the back of my truck! I wont leave home with out them from now on!

This is what we seen on our way out!

After getting out, we decided to head for another cattle farm we had close by. Only to fine there were haveing a family reunion! No calling there that day! so, we headed over to the Ohio side to have a look at some new places to call. Made a couple more stands and headed home to meet JD who was headed down to call with us on Monday.

On Monday morning we headed for Jackson Co. To meet up with a new caller and hunt some new ground. the first part of the morning we hunted some walk in only gated land. It was old mead paper land and man! It had some sign! Here is a look at it....

Good looken land! But it was so green and grew up we had a hard time finding place we could call that we could even see, but I will say this will be some great land after the leaves get off and we can get down in the cover with these coyotes! I see some good shotgun stands in here! We had the same trouble the day before, its go green and grew up its hard to see anything in the woods, and the fields are even grew up very hard to find good stands. Here is a look at some of the sign in there.....

We made a few stands and I took this pic of a view of the truck from about half way threw the walk we made....

You can see the truck if look hard...lol

Here is a few pic's of the gang as we worked our way threw this place....

Here is JD taking a couple breaks during the morning.......

Why would anyone take a pic like that????....LOL

Here is what a camera man looks like after packing that big ass camera for 10 miles!

We headed out of there and went over to hunt another farm on up the road. This guy had one nice farm!

While we were talking around the truck we had a friend checking out the JIB in the truck bed....

During one stand I think JD was sleeping! This coyote must have left this pile were he could not see him? It still had seam comming off of it after the stand!

We went in to this area and made a stand, with no coyotes that showed, we were standing back at the truck talking and had a coyote cross the road right in front of us and head right to were we just made our stand...lol...Never even looked over at us at the truck! But it came un glued when it hit our scent were we walked up the hill! Some times you just cant win! We cant hunt the side of the road were the coyote came from! And now we no were he is spending his daytime hrs!

All and all it was good to get out! It felt good to be back in the woods again and with good friends!

I new JD would like that pic! Nice to hunt with guys that are good humored and fun! I know I will pay for that but, I owed him one myself!

Its just so green right now its tough to call here unless you hunt the cattle farms. And it being a holiday weekend there was people every were. The walk in area had a couple guys running dogs in there after we got back into the area. And we heard four wheelers. Its walk in only! We were eating lunch down in town and the gamewarden passed us up. He was headed to that area with a four wheeler in his truck! There were some UN happy people I would say.

The big cattle farm will be a good spot! There was cat sign in there as well! Down by a old rocky area. Seemed to be several coyotes in there as well. Shot some good video of were one had got hung in the fence and lost some of his hide! That was cool! Even got JD to talk on camera!

It was real good to get out! It felt real good, even the 10 mile walk...lol

Hey Fuzz! Good to see ya come over here! Welcome! I been trying to get JD a job with the State Killen weeds!.. :roflmao:

Greenside,

I liked the looks of that pond myself, but we could not call it. There were some guys down in there running beagle dogs, and the wind was wrong for that stand. But you can bet I will be back down in there in the brush with them before long! That spot looked real good! Next time it wont be on a Holiday weekend.

FinsnFur thanks for the welcome.

Kee im glad you liked that spot,I think it will be some good calling once a good frost hits.We didnt cover1/3 of the ground in there. There are sevral ponds scattered all over that place. The one in the picture is one of the smaller ones. There is also some very large beaver ponds over on the other side of the road. That area is all standing timber and will have to wait for the leaves to fall. There is so much ground in there it would take a few days to cover it all.Im going to check out a new spot up around wellston this weekend, hopefully i can call a couple in up there.Ill let you guys know how i do.

Hey Kee, great story. Super pics too. I know what you mean about things being too green! I can't find a decent stand anywhere. High weeds, thick under brush, you know the drill. I went to look over some new real estate this evening, and was put back in the truck by the mosquitos! They were relentless. I did find a couple nice "green strips" the state plants on the public land for deer feed. Like you say, I'll be back when the frost knocks the bugs back.
