Option 1: Night
Option 2: Mid Day
Option 3: Evening
Option 4: Morning
Option 5: Other
I know you guys get tired of this sort of thing, but it's summer and I'm sick of it. So answer my little poll and then you can go pout about it.
Who knows, you might even want to give a little reason on why you prefer the time of day that you do.
Is it because you think you have a better chance at a coyote or is that the best time for you to hunt due to jobs, family, etc?
I like to hunt in the morning It gives me all day to hunt and sometimes i need that and more to find what what I am hunting for
I like mornings in the summer just because it's cooler. :whew: But through my limited experience, my most productive time has been about 9 AM till 4 PM. Middle of the day. :wo:
I think there should have been an anytime of day button. I like morning too, Same reason as bncont. You can just stay out til your done or just stay out there if you want. :innocentwhistle:
I like the mornings as well. Being able to spend the entire day with Lil-man and setting up and being there when the woods come alive. Plus as an extra bonus I get to hear the wife fuss about the lights being on, the alarm going off on a Saturday, the dogs barking wanting out which really gets her goose.......Ahhhh, the morning hunt is priceless. Get's even for all those mornings of being woke up by the hair dryer. And the dogs. And the lights. And the alarm......
I prefer fox hunting at night, but I rather coyote hunt right at first light, for some reason I've seen, heard, called more at that time.
I haft to go with Mid day! Over the last two years we have put more fur down between 10:00am and 4:00pm than any other time.
I think allot of guys miss some good hunting by just getting out at first light and dark! a little change in tactics and you can score anytime of the day. We call the mid day just as hard as we do first light or last light.
Brent
I like mid day myself. The risk of bumpin one out of an open field at first light keeps me in bed till it's nice and bright. Unless were traveling an hour or two, to an area to hunt, then were up before the birds
JD
To actually hunt, I go with Mid Day too.
But there is that magic time of day, when you sit down and it's still dark, and just as things begin to come into foccus, and the woods around you start to wake up, that is my favorite time to be out there.

My favorite is evening but I'm gonna look seriously into the 9AM-5PM shift now. I like mornings alot but after getting up every day between 2:30AM & 5AM for work all week I just don't want to get up some mornings. :laf:
All day, every day but I was born poor and have to work.
I voted in the morning , but I find some of the better hunting Mid day until dark on those overcast balmy days. I have killed lots of coyotes at high noon. In the summer I like getting out at first break of daylight to avoid the heat . It is a beautiful time to be out.
Strictly from a percentage stand point, I think the first hour or two of daylight are hard to beat. But like others have said coyote call be called successfully just about any time of day. I will say from my experience with spot and call that the midday hours you have a better chance of dealing with what I call passive or indifferent coyotes. You know the ones that you can throw the whole kitchen sink at and all you get is an occasional glance or stand up and look and then lay back down.
I do change tactics during midday by trying to get a little tighter to cover and depending on the season rarely howl.
Hey Greenside,
"I do change tactics during midday by trying to get a little tighter to cover and depending on the season rarely howl."
I got to ask, why not much howling? You know I do allot of howling and I'm just always digging for diffrent reasons, theory's, and such I'm always interested in every ones tactic's and reasons! Please!...lol
Brent
Brent, As you probably know, I do a lot of howling , and I mean a lot. I just about always start my set out with a howl all year around, with the exception of a few hurt pup in certain situations. Our coyotes here are pretty responssive to the howls both vocally and just coming to the howl. It doesn't seem to matter what time of year or day. I know in other parts of the country , it is not like that from what some guys tell me. As to why that is , it may be pressure or not much densities, who knows. I just do what works here in the Dakotas. It's kinda funny and even on the windy days it works.
well you needed a button to say "all of the above" because anytime is great when your in my line of work it's when can I get a few hrs away
I'm with ya brother. How true. :yoyo:
I have howled in alot of coyotes in the middle of the day here. With the population increasing, I'm getting vocal responses mid-day as well. The funny thing about my area is, there is also a house in every direction you look. Well, it's not funny, But I'm used to it..

Well I've only been Coyote Hunting for the past three years but my favorite time is when I'm out on the stand, This Predator hunting is so addictive that when I'm not out on the stand I'm thinking about where or how I want to make my next stand. Here in the south during the summer its pretty hot during mid-day and its tuff sitting out there sweating so its more pleasent early moring and late evening but I don't rule out anytime of the day or night if I have a good hunting buddy and a good spot to call,I'm ready to go. cc
I prefer to hunt at first light in the morning. The coyotes generally sound off on their own and can be quite responsive to howling at this time. I'll hunt any time of the day, but this is my favorite time to be out hunting. Besides, you still have the rest of the day to hunt too. MI VHNTR
It's whenever I get the chance. I work swing shift so I hunt what I can when I can.
I say morning, not for any real "hunting" reason but I go mornings. That way I can still get other stuff done later in the day.
if I were to go later in the day then I will just sleep late and loaf around and get nothing done before I go hunting.

Don't get the impression that I think howling at midday doesn't work or that it will cost you coyote. I howl a lot for locating, long distance calling as a primary lead call and I've been doing it for a long time. My feeling is that in my area it just doesn't increase the percentages or the success rate per stand like it does in the first few hours or the last couple hours of the day. And if it doesn't increase my chances I see little need of throwing my ace.
I'm basing this on my observation over the years on spotted coyote and what their reaction is to calling when I can actually see them when calling or when a partner is out of the coyote sight and what the reaction is to the call. Might be what you call bedded coyote or maybe it's just a resting coyote.
In my prior post I mentioned the term indifferent when IT comes to that midday time frame. And I think that is pretty sums it up on a certain percentage(maybe as high as 50 or more) of coyote in that time frame. No matter what you give them, howls , kiyi's , distress ...etc, they just are no going to come in. But at the same time the active ones seem to readily respond to just about any sound and it's usually quite fast in those midday hours. Even without leading with a howl they still seem like they will come so why waste the howl on them.
Hell , I might Even try the same stand later in the day ,if nothing shows in the first place, and give them a few howls and have some luck.
Hope that makes sense? The last thing I want to do is change your MO, if it works for you
BTW: I always have a small ground tarp in the back of my truck. In the midday time frame it's not unusual for me to throw it out in some sunny ditch and take a short 20 minute nap before hitting it hard again. Doe's wonders for me!
Thanks Greenside! I howl allot, always have and it just peaks my curiosity when I here someone say they have different tactic's, and I am always interested in how everyone else does things or what there toughs are. Hell that's what makes us better hunters! I have found that different people develop different toughs, tactic's, and styles all across the country and I just find it very interesting to hear about them!
I enjoy applying coyote vocalizations in my stands, don't get me wrong I don't howl on every stand but dang near it at one point in the stand or the other. And I don't change my calling much due to the time of day it is, but I do change my set up some. It just depends on the area I am calling.
Brent
I enjoy reading the responses and it shows how different parts of the country get different reactions,
I do not like to hunt right at daylight it is the worst time for us here. 1 hour after daylight is the best time for us. Mid day is my favorite when it is very cold and afternoon is the worst time for me anytime of the year. I have killed many coyotes at all different times of the day but have found 1 hour after daylight till 10 am to be the most productive time here in general.
I don't do much if hardly any howling have not had much luck with it. Seen more leaving after I howled than seen coming in. This just shows how different each area of the country is. I do have to admit I only started doing a lot of howling after meeting ilcoyote and stan the man at LBL 5 years ago. Before then I usually only howled for locating.
I like the last few stands before dark the best because they seem to be the most productive. The last stand is the greatest, when it gets too dark to see, and the terrain fades into black, the coyotes that are smarter than me start to sound off, it's a beautiful thing. I guess if I got out of bed earlier I would like the first light just as much though. Maybe I should try it on a day I don't have to work :innocentwhistle:

What state are you out of?
I voted evening with mass. in mind because the whole pack would make a racket at the edge of a marsh/cedar swamp/hay field on my family's property a few times a week, right around sunset. But now that i'm in cacalacky (NC), i just don't know. Any one familiar with the piedmont region please, give me a shout or shoot me an email.
Where is Cacalacky Bushmaster? I'm in Midland, NC..... just a bit east of Charlotte. I've only been trying to call yotes for the last year or so. The few I have seen come in were at different times. I don't think I have ever heard a vocal response, but some of the places I hunt I do hear what I think are domestic dogs...... but then the first turkey I called in sounded like a domestic dog to me initially :doh2:
There are a few boys around that call, but mostly I hear of ones taken from deer stands or trapped.
Studabaka
No shit!!! Cacalacky is my nickname for carolina. I live on the concord/Midland line, right off of 601. I'd love to meet up with someone after coyotes in this area. I don't know many people here, let alone predator hunters.
