Title: What's everybody's opinion on using blinds?
Post by: iahntr on January 06, 2008, 12:44:49 PM
Just curious if anybody uses, or has used, portable blinds while calling. A friend of mine uses one every once in a while. I know of at least one instance where he has called one in using it. I realize not much of a test. I have not used one myself yet, but there is a few spots where I may give it a try. Like certain fence lines that don't have much for cover on them. Any experiences with em? Thanks, Scott

We use the blind in the pic when we are in open areas like this it helps hide all the gear we drag along at times. This is a frame grab from an actual hunt. It does seem to help.

Can't hurt. Allows you to maybe get away with a little shifting of the legs and butt when they are about asleep.

While I haven't tried it yet, I did get one (like pictured) for this spring's turkey hunt.  Also, Becky got me a tent for hunting deer this year.

I've pondered getting one also. I know it would help in certain set ups but I have enough stuff to carry as it is.

I use the duck blinds out on the river bottoms when I'm out there. There are several make shift blinds made up of the surroundings that duck hunters have cobbled together. I think they are great.

I dont know if I'd be too confident in the one you got pictured there. It sure doesnt match it's surroundings very well. Maybe an old Seseme Street shower curtain would work better.

Ok... :laf: :laf:  That was uncalled 4

I use the same blind CCP has for tukeys. I have a popup blind for rainy day deer & turkey. I shot my Tom from behind the screen blind this past spring after the hen walked right by me at less than 10 feet. I like that little blind.

The popup blind is great for rainy day hunts on turkey & deer. The turkeys will practically walk right into it. Deer see it then look it over good & keep an eye on it for a little bit. Then they settle down.

For coyotes,, the popup,, IMHO,, is way too much work, noise,& movement.

Just my opinion.

Hey Bop!! You got the damn thing on backwards again!!  :rolleye: Try looking the OTHER direction next time you put it on!! :roflmao: :roflmao:

Thanks for the opinions so far.    even the comic relief :laf:
Soooo,,, do you think a coyote would come in close enough, with in bow range,
using a decoy, in a pop up blind where your totally concealed with shoot through netting ?
I think it's kind of interesting how deer and turkey act differently to a blind. I've had turkey brush against the side of my blind,
and I've had deer blow at me when they were 100 yds away.

I think you could get one with in bow range. take your rifle for those that dont. More stuff to carry but I think it would be cool to try,

Hey Bop!! Who you callin ugly!!

:roflmao: :roflmao:

I would like to add to the post again productively.  :laf:  The screen blind works even better when the Gobbler Lounger chair from Cabelas is used. I like mine so much I bought a spare. They run around $32 with shipping. It is a very comfortable chair & quiet. Several times last spring I caught myself nodding off in it. :laf:  It keeps you just a few inches off the ground & at 5' 9" I can just see over the top of the screen blind from it.

Depending on your terrain it might be too low tho. I can see where that would be a problem for coyotes. On the bright side for those of us with lower back troubles,, I never had any problems while using this chair. It was way better than using the wedge cushion or even the 3" thick square life preserver I picked up for $10 on sale.

Blinds are just too much added weight and nuisance for me. I am a run and gun hunter, making anywhere from 15-20 stands a day. I try and travel as light as possible.

Have you ever thought about a light weight synthetic ghillie jacket?

"..run and gun....15-20 stands a day..."
I could see where you'd want to keep it as light as possible! Right now I don't have that much land to make very many stands, so usually I just get to do a couple in the a.m. and maybe a couple in the p.m. on the weekends. Because I have limited places to hunt, and enjoy being out there, I spend more time on a stand then most. So a blind to set up is not as much of an issue for me. I hope to get more land in the near future.

Al, I think a ghillie suit would work great in most cases.
A couple of the instances I had in mind for the blind were, the one being, calling one within bow range on the ground and being able to draw on it.
The other was, friends of ours dog about got killed by somethin here a while back, mauled real bad, I didn't get to see him, and I think if it was a yote, I think it would've killed him, but who knows. They have heard em howl before around there place, and asked if I would go out there sometime, and take there 13 yr old son with me. They have basically flat crop ground, divided by fence lines. So, between taking him with, and having very little cover to set up on, I thought maybe a blind would be worth tryin. Thanks guys.

I have considered one of those chair blinds but havent decided yet  I have a matrix blind and use it for deer hunting in the rain but prefer a tree stand so I can hear better.   Personally I think a guilli suit works best.

We got my Dad a chair blind. He uses it for deer since he carries a 44Mag. He has walked out of a field in the daylight without spooking the deer while still inside it. They make them now for 2 people which should make it easier to draw a bow in I would think.

Jim my Yankee friend :doh2: I guess this could be a problem if you are looking at the small picture. When setting up you have to look at the BIG picture. What you see at 5 yards versus a coyote at 20 to 100 yards is totally different. Here are some more frame grabs from that stand at different perspectives.

Looking into blind at 5 yards above us.

What coyote see's from 60 yards

What coyote see's if he could zoom up like we did on the camera.

QuoteMaybe an old Seseme Street shower curtain would work better.

Maybe not better but just as good. We only wanted to break our human outline and hide our gear. The color doesn't matter to us other than the camouflage pattern just looks cooler around our buddy's.

here in Texas there are a lot of deer blinds on some of the places we hunt and if elevated I love to sit in them with the caller on the ground below.  You can see so much more and often see animals coming from a long ways off.  :yoyo:

I'm gussing a blind probably has alot to do with where and how you hunt. The way I hunt I have no need for a blind, nor do I have the time to play with one.
I 'm no expert or pro predator caller, but in the pictures I see trees in tight country. I'd personally back up against a tree and use a shotgun without using a blind.
I wounder if my odds of calling in a coyote would go down vs someone using a blind?
