Title: Fleshing Knife?
Post by: finhunter on January 12, 2008, 01:28:43 PM
I picked this thing up at a flea market for $3. Is this a fleshing knfe or skife that was mentioned in other topics? Can it be used for one.

That's called a draw knife, mainly used, I believe, for debarking logs years ago. It would work for flesheing I guess if you got used to it.

This is what a skife knife looks like

It has a razorblade in it, and is used for fine detail shaving on the skins.

i believe draw knives were also used to make cedar shingles (when they were made by hand) and also used simular to a hand help plane. i have three different drw knives i use for fleshing (different shapes to the blades) and only have one problem with them; and thats probably my style of fleshing more so than the draw knives. i lean my fleshing board against the wall of my shed and fleshing toward myself, if your careful its not as messy as you think.
