Title: Chicken anyone??

I figure since most folks scroll down to see the pictures 1st I thought this would make it easier.  :laf:

The 2nd stand today produced this nice female at juat under 100yds. I started with female invitation for a couple howls then waited 2 minutes. Then I went to the Chicken Distress on the FX3 & within 2 minutes I was lighting a fire under a 40gr Berger HP & hoping for the best!! She came into the hay field 200yds out & just loped into the gun. She was fixed on the FP as she came in looking for the Colonel!! When she got inside the 100yd mark I let her have it. She made it about 60yds into the woods where her hunger pains were no longer an issue to either of us.  :eyebrownod: :eyebrownod:

Jrb,Hamer
The chicken on a string story brings back memories for me. When I was about 16, a friend and I actually took one of his chickens out and staked it down, tied to a string  . It was a full moon night with snow on and as soon as that chicken started squalling and raising ten kinds of hell, my first thought and first thing I said to Mike was, we didn't bring enough shells :holdon:

Unfortunately, nothing showed up :rolleye:

You'd be amazed how many people are out there tying chickens up by their hind legs and poking them with a stick!!!   Seriously.

A couple years ago Pilgrim and I came across a dead chicken hanging along a fencerow... and then called a coyote nearby.   A guy that works for me put his daughters pet rabbit in a milk crate (two weeks ago) and sat it in the field behind his house all night... thinking a coyote would be standing beside it when the sun came up.

Some folks just have no concept;

A chicken on a string is tollerable, or at the very least understandable to a unknowledgable but motivated aspiring caller, but wait till someone tags a double using "crocodile distress".

Yer the man Glen!

Way to go Glen!  Did that dog come out into the field?  Both of the ones I have killed did.  I feel more comfortable where I can see for a ways.  But I am being told that I need to get down into the thick stuff to kill dogs.  Sure is confusing.  Could you describe you setup?

Nah, Hammer, we already have seen and heard the monkey and chicken deal. Chicken on a string would just be an appetizer  :eyebrownod:

Frogman, we are not sayin they won't come out into the fields. But our odds are much better when we can get them to work the edges of the woods and thickets.  Give them some sort of comfort zone near th setup and they will work it.  Anytime I can put a fencerow to good use I do so. And I prefer that type of setup when I can get it.  One of my favorite setups is a place where a fencerow joins a wood lot and a thicket. There is only 75 yards betwen the two along that fencerow but I am able to work both at the same time. Predominant winds blow out into a pasture behind me. So the animals naturally work th fencerow instead of going out into that field of cattle to wind me.Jimmie

Hi Jim-- Thanks!! I didn't have my camera in the truck with me so I'll try.

The road was about 40yds behind me. I was setting along the edge of a small patch of trees that borders the hay field. The FP was to my right on a small knoll in the field about 50yds or so to my right & upwind. I expected a coyote to come out closer in front of me or to my left in the corn stubble downwind. Instead she came out to my right & ran to me while watching the FP strangle that chicken.  She ran about 100yds to get downwind of me & I shot her before she could. She was stsring a hole thru the FP while she followed the edge of the field. I figure since it had been so cold the last few days & since she was holed up on the North hollow,, very little sunlight in there & it was 10* colder,, that she musta been hungry. She tried to get downwind but I wouldn't let her get that far. I'll get some pics from out there.

OK fellas.

How long should I wait to go back & see if this female had a mate??

The only sounds I used were female invitation & chicken distress.

Unfortunately I witnessed the chicken and leotard incident Bopeye is talking about. I have never got that out of my head. Yes I have drank a lot since then and it just want go away.

I do know Chet and Bop used the Chicken in distress with success years ago. Just remember the chicken distress does not go along well with dancing and leotards. :roflmao: :roflmao:
