Does anyone know [or know a possible source] as to what percentage of Americans have served in the armed forces and what percentage of Americans are currently serving?
I was shipped to Ft. Benning, GA many, many moons ago. I Stayed for about 10 days before getting shipped back home and discharged. My wife was pregnant and put on bed rest she was actually hospitalized for a month with phlebitis (bloodclots) in her legs. And so ended my military career  I hardly count that as serving and don't want to take away from those that have. I have a great deal of respect for those in the armed forces.

dont really know numbers but i'll bet they were higher when the draft was still in effect.
Over 1.3 million on active duty, Another 1.1 million serve in the National Guard and Reserve forces
Source DOD web site http://www.defenselink.mil/pubs/dod101/index.html
U.S. current population 303,592,554 source http://www.census.gov/population/www/popclockus.html
looks like a bit less that 1/2 of 1% on active duty, and a bit less than 1% both active and reserve/guard
I dont know how you would find the answer to how many or what percentage have served, but I would bet it's out there somewhere.
Hope that helps
