Title: Backyard yote (long read)
Post by: stxhunter on March 29, 2008, 09:03:28 PM
We had seen another coyote behind our house earlier this week, but I couldn't get out there this week due to work.  I went out around 7:00 this evening, put out my decoy about 40 yards from me and sat under a young mesquite that was hanging low to the ground.  This was my first time out with the decoy and I was anxious to see how it would work!  I started calling with the Burnham Brothers mini blaster planing to switch to a Dan Thompson's PC-1 after a few minutes.  I began making short series of calls no longer than about 30 seconds each and waiting 30 seconds before calling again.

I made a couple of short calls, looked around nothing.  Made another series of calls, again nothing.  After the third set of calls I kinda figured it was a long shot for the coyote to still be in the area.

I was looking around and out pops a young coyote from an orange grove not too far from me.  He is coming straight to the call when he stops about 125 yards or so from me, staring at something.  I had totally forgotten about my decoy!!  He froze for a while and I was thinking about what to do to bring him into shotgun range.

I remembered that the call I was using could change pitch by biting down on it just a bit and thats what I did.  As I began the high pitch calls he began trotting in at a good pace, I stoped calling and he kept coming.

I was sitting on a "turkey" seat that was low to the ground and I hadn't realized I could NOT see over the grass.  Every now and then I could make out some ears and then a tail then nothing.  I had lost the coyote in the grass, but I was pretty sure he had spotted the decoy and was headed straight for it!! I then see the little dog coming out of the grass about 20-30 paces directly in front of my location heading straight toward the decoy.  I waited till he had cleared the grass put the truglo site on his nogging and squeezed the trigger.

The yote was down 12 paces from my location, the closest a yote had ever gotten to me before I had pulled the trigger!!  I believe if I had not used the decoy the hunt would have had a totally different outcome!!

Nice story and coyote! It's always good to bring them within shotgun range with the hand calls.

Thanks guys!! The decoy was a mojo critter.  I searched for a while to find my "perfect" decoy.  I stumbled upon the mojo and instantly fell in love.  It is small, light weight, affordable and works great!  It seemed like the majority of decoys out there were in the shape of a rabbit that pretty much sat there and vibrated, for me this wasn't enough movement.  The Mojo critter spins around for 2.5 seconds and shuts down for 2.5 seconds; this movement seemed very unique and was just what I was looking for.  They have two videos on their sight that really sold me on this particular decoy.  You can view them at http://mojooutdoors.com/MTV_predator.htm and http://mojooutdoors.com/MTV_critter.htm.  Mojo also has another predator decoy, but it was almost twice as much $$ and I wasn't thrilled with it's action.
