Title: What 204 load for coyotes?
Post by: stxhunter on April 01, 2008, 05:31:28 PM
I just got my CZ 204 and topping it with a Bushnell elite 4200. I haven't gotten to shoot it yet but I bought a box of 34 grain winchester JHP and a box of Federal 39 grain sierras. I didn't realize till I got home that the winchesters were lubolax coated. I have never shot a lubolax round before, is there anything I need to know? I have heard the V-max may have a little "splash" effect resulting in wounded rather than dead coyotes. In general what round would you guys recommend for coyotes?

stx-- Congrats on the 204!! Did you get the American or the Varmint?? They are both nice rigs & that 4200 should top it nicely.

The most popular bullet for fur is the 35gr Berger.  Everybody has used all the available bullets to date & have had mixed results. But the 35 always seems to rise to the top with the 40gr Berger & 39gr Sierra BK running a close 2nd. Here's a site that you just might find interesting. And if you're on the fence Jimbo just check this place out if you haven't already.  :eyebrow:

I shoot a Tac 20 which is balistically the same as a .204. I shot it for four years and still own it , but did not take it to the field this year. I know a lot of fellows have had good success with the 35 gr. bergers, but I have not. The Vmax is worse, in my opinion. I am talking shooting called coyotes. I have had more runners with this cartridge than any I have ever used. To me, the problem is that no one manufactures a good 20 caliber bullet. The bullets I have used seem to splash when hitting a coyote too far forward and this happens practically every time. A good 20 caliber bullet with a heavier jacket would fix most of the problems I have had.

I have the varmint version, it was actually cheaper than the American version go figure!!  Is there any manufacturer that loads the Berger bullets?  All that I have found are the 40 grain versions loaded by HSM which are sold by Cabela's.  The "splash" effect that RShaw is talking about is exactly what I want to avoid!!!

By the way.....I edited the error you copied and put in your post stxhunter

You didnt do anything wrong, but the guys user name to his domain controls, and the direct path to a pretty hackable file on it, was included.

Figured maybe the guy wouldnt really want that on a public form while he tries to get er back up.

My handle is the same as here but I can't get past the error to register.

I'm shoot the HSM 40gr Bergers(Haven't had to time to setup the press) and they are shooting sub 1/2" MOA at 100yards with my AR w/ 1:10 twist.
