Title: Spring Beaver?
Post by: nailbender on April 11, 2008, 11:05:05 PM
Anybody out catching?  Ice came out real late here but when the water opened up I couldn't resist a few handy sets on route to work.  Only caught one, probably 45lbr, in a snare. And a toe in a poorly bedded foothold a couple days later.
One isn't worth drivng to the buyer so I 'll tan it and hang it.  But I just ate the backstrap for supper and dayumm thats some good stuff!  Wish our seaason was longer!

Ours season ended March 31. I know some states have a spring season, but I could never understand why they would extend the season past March. How did the fur look on those beaver?

As far as eating it...I have tried beaver and muskrat. I would say either one was terribly bad. Actually, it was kind of good and tasted a bit like roast beef. The muskrats were a bit richer and tended to be more like liver...Still good though. Mountain used to eat a lot of beaver. My tyrapping partner makes sausage out of his beaver. I used to have an oldtimer pick up all of my beaver carcasses until we moved. He would make sausage out them as well. He gave a me a pack or two and it wasn't half bad. I wish I still had him to pick up my carcasses though.
