The musky been hittin recently, been seeing some pics of some nice ones. One in particular my cousin got a 56 incher sunday evening. He gave me some tips on the topwater lures and line he's been using but any other suggestions out there to fish these beasts ??? I'll be fishing river conditions.
I've never really focused on them before.

I fish for them. But found that every one has there own way they go about it. Get some good equip. Reels and rods to handle them. And a few good baits to toss and go for it. Most of the guys here are into trolling.Muskie fishing is like calling. You can go over board on equip, and you don't need too.The guy that got me into it has about $2000.00 just in plugs.I didn't get that crazy. :rolleye:
I have found that speed of retreave has a lot to do with catching them, You can not reel too fast or too slow but when you change speed close to one.........look out! We used to set our fish finder up to find the thermocline and I usualy find it around here this time of year around 7-9 ft. then we would troll weedlines and breaks at that depth on overcast days.
We set our speed so be would bump the weeds or stucture using a LARGE spinnerbait tipped with a powertail. Everytime we felt a bump on the weeds or structure (Braided line handy here) we would quickly speed up the trolling motor to MAX.
If you were the guy not running the motor you rip the rod forward hard then reel back to position keeping a tight line.
I would say most of our fish came on that fast change in speed.
Going out very early in the mourning is best also We try and be there about a half hour before daylight, and try and do some top water first in the shollows then troll later. I have seen these things hit in the prop wash of an outboard motor and I have seen em spook at the cast........ :shrug: Just fish where they are, never give up and always play out in your mind what your bait is doing. Thanks guys, the rivers too low to troll now with the damn blown out. I think thats why they're hitting them the way they are. All the big fish were forced into the deeper holes/flats.
I shouldnt be able to walk across it this time of year but its only knee deep in some locations.

Big Big 10"to 14"bucktails retrieved relatively fast and match the color of the bait fish in the river your fishin in.
Always worked great for me in northern wis. :wink:
