Excellent work on those calls!

One note about all of the ebony woods - they are all very hard and dense with close grain.  If you turn the speed down on your drill press, or lathe, and make sure to back out and clean the flutes of your drill biy about every 3/4 of an inch, it will work better for you.  The more the flutes in your drill bit get filled up with chips, the more likely you will crack a blank as the new chips have no where to go as they really can get packed in there.

Heat can also play a large part in a blank blowing up.  The heat again is caused by the flutes in the bit getting filled up and the new chips not having anywhere to go.  The more they pack in, the more friction and the more heat.

You can keep the bit and the blank cool with ice water or you can use an air compressor to just blow the bit off when you back it out.  The cold air from the compressor will do the trick for you if you have one.

Again, those calls are beauties.  Very nicely done!

Al

Thanks for the advice Al, I do appreciate any words of wisdom, the first blank I blew I tried to run a 1/2 bit through it,,,well that was dumb,,this time I started with a 1/4 and worked my way up,,,3 cranks on the tail then backed it out, even removing 1/16" as I went up in bit size would heat up the bit, It took a dang long time to bore the hole,,,30 minutes or better if I remember right, I had the Jet on the slowest speed, I never thought about the compressor, and it was sitting right there   I sure liked the ebony though
