Title: Black Walnut Howler
Post by: John_NY on June 20, 2008, 07:58:36 PM
I'll take your advice Hamer to get my posts up to 25. Here is a howler I made today. It is the second one I have done since I got my collet chuck the other day. It works great. It's hard to imagine turning calls without the chuck and mandrel now. I love it.  :highclap:

Are you using one of dogcatchers mandrels?

I heard they are very good and they look really nice but no I'm not using one of his. My son made some for himself " he turns calls to" so I had him make me a couple. I still need a couple more sizes so I gotta get him to make me some more. Not only that they are free.  :laf:

I want a short mandrel so I do not have to use the tailstock. I can make it......... if I understood how it worked but I have no problem buying a couple of them. I just want the freedom to turn with out that dang tailstock.
The one on that link is nice but it uses the tailstock and does no more than the one I have on my big lathe.

The ones my son made me look similar to the ones in the photo except shorter so no tail stock. They work great. I like the fact i took the tail stock off the lathe. It sure has speeded up turning a call.

Al, Here is a picture of my mandrel in the collet chuck. It's not the best picture,  my walmart camera is now held together with a rubberband.  :doh2:

The little door on the bottom that holds the batteries in doesn't stay shut and the camera keeps turning off. The rubberband holds it tight enough to keep the cheap thing on.

As far as the mandrel just pop the 5/8 rod in your chuck and use a grinder to round the end while it's spinning. Pop it out and use your grinder to cut in the notch. You gotta use what you have. We used the end of a welding rod for the lock pin. We may have just got lucky but it spins true no wobble or anything. We have 4 different sizes and they all seem to work ok. It might not be the best way but it works. I did lay a file on it after it was done to get a little better fit on a pre drilled 5/8 hole in the turning block. You can also lay the file on the mandrel and the tool rest and check it, There is no problem I can see. It runs true.

I should add here this type is usually used for sanding but if you don't hog into the wood they seem to work fine for turning.

my brother in law is pretty good with his metal lathe I think I will try it but I do not have a collet chuck. :wo: I have a three jaw and a four jaw for my small lathe and a four jaw for my big lathe :wo:
I love how long those howlers of yours are and the way I am turnning them is a pain.

I like the longer howlers too. I think they are louder. Atleast they seem like it to me.

I know this might be a stupid question, but I'm at least good at that. I like the mandrels. What keeps the blank from spinning on the mandrel. Is the piece of welding rod just to keep pressure on the blank? If this is "trade secrets" then thats fine. If it was a piece of half moon keyway stock, wouldn't it keep the blank a little more secure while turning?
Thanks,
Dusty

thanks for the link. I was going to try and explain what I really know nothing about. the link explains it all. When you are done the piece comes back off the mandrel real easy. It still amazes me everytime I take a call off the mandrel. You could always do what I do. don't think about it. In my case thinking hurts.

Thanks for the info. I spoke to Jerry(HawksFeather) tonight on the phone. He told me about how they work. Thats a pretty slick little tool. I may have to check into making one of those.

y mdrel is about an inch and a half from the end to the notch. The notch is about another inch and a half the about another inch and half. There is about an inch or so inside the collet. So it is about It's about five and a half to six inches total. But most of my howlers are between 6 and 7 inches long so the short mandrel gives me lots of room to hollow out the ends.

You made me stop and think a minute myself AlsCalls. I have only been turning calls for a couple months. I have been making calls from antlers for almost a year and I had alot of help. Kerry Carver has been a great help from day one. Then I met Al @ THO and he has been a great guy and alot of help to me also. I feel very fortunate for finding these forums around the internet. If not for all the call maker sites I never would have given it a try. So to those guys I owe alot. I have learned alot from most everyone who posts on these forums. I try reading as much as I can before I join up. It's been quite a learning experience and alot of fun and met alot of nice people.

Thanks everyone
John
