Title: Country boy...
Post by: nastygunz on June 30, 2008, 09:26:07 PM
...I grew up in the country as a kid listening to the music my parents did, Hank Williams, Sr, Loretta Lynn, Conway Twitty, Johnny Cash, Merle Haggard,George Jones, etc. I grew up and along the way listened to all kinds of other music but I still listen to the "Classics" and I think I know the words to every Hank, Sr song ever wrote and Hank, Jr for that matter. There are young kids in my family if you listen close youll hear em listening to George and Merle, thats country. My folks are both 80 now and my dad has been seriously ill for a long time. One of my brothers got them a cd player awhile back so I burned them a whole bunch of cd's on my computer of old country classics like  Hank Williams,Sr live radio shows which they loved. I love the Johnny Cash Cd with the song "Hurt" on it that shows a old, sick, tired Johnny Cash towards the end of his life even as the song became a megahit. I burned the cd for my dad and drove up one weekend and gave it to him and said I think you might like this and we sat down and listened to it together and we were listening to the song "Hurt" and he broke down and started crying because he said it was so sad. This a guy who was a massive tank of a man in his day, a heavyweight prizefighter, seaman, veteran, etc. My mom said he never played the CD again after that 1 time. I guess watching the movie "Walk the Line" brought some memories back about growing up and country music and I figure their are alot of country folks on here so I was curious as to what kind of music folks on here grew up with? Its a powerful force for sure.

Grandpa would listen to a country station in the kitchen when I was a kid.  When I hit the teens I listened to rock, but still like country.
I now listen to country only, and the newer country really dont cut it like the older classics.

My fav is Hank Jr., his older stuff.

I had the come back and modify this, didnt use the spell check and it was horrible  :nono:

I grew up in that era, Nastygunz.

My dad ran a tavern (some called it a honky tonk beer joint) for almost 40 years.  I grew up in it.  Jim Reeves, Merle, Johnny Cash, Hank, Loretta, Patsy Cline (my favorite female singer), too many to remember.  Every Friday and Saturday night was a party with the juke box playing those old time songs.  Sometimes he booked some local small country band to play.  Dad would throw dance wax on the floor and everyone got drunk and had a great time.

Brings back memories.

I like classic country & the outlaw stuff. Johnny Cash, Willie, Conway, Waylon Jennings, I even like a little Don Williams, the list could go on for days.
There are a lot of bands from around Austin Texas & I really like there style, they play some of the honkey tonk stuff mixed with just about anything you can imagine.

Dad still listens to those old songs. I like Johnny Cash, Hank Jr & Willie Nelson the most out of those artists. I went to R&R & quickly became a huge fan of most of the bands in the late 70's trhu the 80's. Bob Seger is my all time favorite but I could list many many others that are top notch in my music liking.

A buddy just last week scored me a ticket to see Willie Nelson in Red Lodge Montana :highclap:
Red Lodge is at the base of the "Beartooth Highway" heading into Yellowstone National Park.

I grew up learning to play bluegrass, country and gosple on my guitar. In my early high school days I played in a few rock bands and one of my school mates "Arlis Smith" Who is now rich and famous and will not even return my messages. He is a music writer.....Look him up he is also an ASS to his old friends.(That song Mayberry? He wrote it about my hometown)
If I turn on my radio I turn to country.

Boy do I feel like the odd man out and I'm probably gong to hear it for this but here go's.

I do like Hank JR. but I really can't stand (sorry guys) that other stuff! It's WAY to sappy, whiny and twangy. What do you get when you play country music backwards? Your dog, wife and truck back!!!

I graduated high school in 89. The 80's hair band's were big!  Motley Crue, Warrant, Dokken, Dio, Van Halen and many others I can't think of but most of my favorites were from the 70's. Zepplin, Metalica, Black Sabbath, Foghat, Bob Sieger, Ted Nugent, Molly Hatchet and so many others.  :yoyo:  :yoyo:

I still listen to classic rock the most but I have been getting into some of the newer stuff. Three doors Down, Nickle Back and The Plain White Tee's type of stuff.

OK I can take let me have it!!!!!

I'm with Chad on this one...80's bands and some of the older R&R. Throw in a bit of Nine Inch Nails and I'm happy. I don't listen to it all of the time, but that is my preference. I can listen to just about anything except for Rap, R&B and most country. I will allow some Shania, Faith Hill and Carrie Underwood - even if she does need anger management classes

I listen to an alternative rock station most of the time and find some real interesting stuff.

Hank Jr. was my MAN in school. Went to one of his concerts in '86 or '87 can't remember now. He got so drunk that he never finished a song. Pissed me off and I burned every cassette I had, which was several. I still enjoy listening to Hank, Waylon, Johnny, etc. , but really more for reminiscing than anything.
Talked to Johnny Cash one time at the Nashville Airport. He was courteous and BIG. Ms. June Carter was setting there as well.........she didn't give me the time of day.  :laf:

TG Shepherd use to date a local gal here. Sat next to him at a softball game one night. He was an affable fella and said I was funnier than heck, but his arrogance grew old pretty quick.  :iroll:

Use to go to the Grand Ole' Opry a lot when we first moved hiere. My kinfolks would all come and want to go. It was fun. Saw Porter Wagner, Grandpa Jones, and several others whose names escape me now. Actually ran into Grandpa Jones at a gas station in Cookeville one time. I asked him if he was Grandpa Jones and he said, "Do you know anyone else that looks like me?" I laughed and said, " Just my grandpa".
He seemed like a good old man.

Went to an AC/DC concert in '89 or '90, it was pretty awesome. Still have some AC/DC money, but don't ever wanna go back to one. I was deaf for two days.........and hungover.

The music I like is just the music I like. It usually crosses several lines and is impossible for me to put it into a certain category. I love listening to Marty Robbins, some of Elvis Presley's stuff, AC/DC, Bluegrass Gospel, any kind of music with bagpipes (especially Amazing Grace), Old Hank Jr. music (none of this Kid Rock crap,), The Doors, Waylon, Lynard Skynard, Bob Seger, Nugent, Foreigner, Shaggy, and the list goes on.

I refuse to accept rap as music anymore. Use to like a little of the early stuff, but this crap is outta hand. It's like an African version of Humpty Dumpty sat on the Wall. NOT FOR ME BABY.

I like most the stuff I've read on this thread though. Later Taters.

Not a big fan of Hank Jr, but I do like the song "Queen of My Heart". I lean more towards Conway, Marty Robbins, Don Williams, Bellamy Brothers, Oak Ridge Boys, Statler Brothers.
I am multifaceted when it comes to music. I really like Nickleback, and love my Southern R&R. Cant beat Molly Hatchet, Skynard, Outlaws, Allman Bros and CDB

Gangsta rap!!!!  :yoyo:

seriously, I like it all or liked it all at one point. Rap, Rock, Country, whatever.

My all time favorite is Pink Floyd.

I like alot of country but do not like female country singers, I don't know why I just really don't care for them.
