I got a little daring today and tried to color a call. I made this howler from a piece of maple. I used a blue sharpie to color the wood. I had to take the insides out of the sharpie to get a good coat of blue on it.
I wonder if it will ever come off my thumbnail. LOL.

That is interesting..what the heck made ya do that?
Can ya tell it was wood?
the devil made me do it. LOL... I don't know, I was turning a call and noticed a set of sharpie markers hanging on the shop wall and thought, what to heck the worst that could happen is I'll throw it out. Yeah up close you can tell it's wood. I put quite a few coats of carnauba wax on it. It kinda feels like plastic. After I got the ink on it, I used a wet paper towel while it was spinning on the lathe to kinda even out the color.

I think it's a pretty clever idea. Kinda using the sharpie ink as a stain.
You can still see the grain beneath it just like regular stain.
You may be on the brink of a new era John :eyebrow: Unless of course this is old news and the oxygen found a way under my rock again.
pretty cool john
What do you think about a red sharpie? I just finished this one this evening.

Real nice John. That is a good idea you came up with.
I can't take credit for the idea but I did think they look, well maybe not the best but atleast different.
I'll see if I can find an orange sharpie. :eyebrownod:
My sister said she has some sort of pickle dye? in green I'm going to try one of these days when I get over to her house. I guess it makes sense, pickles are green. LOL.
