Been reading about hunting and was getting the itch with all the calls I've gotten since last year hanging in my face everyday.
The wife kinda sorta hates these in the road.
So at 4pm I loaded up the boys and their new calls. Bob[10] the bonehead didn't take a call to go calling coyotes and had to borrow one from Don[7] who had grabbed three. Don called the first stand and all that came was a predator.
After a half hour of listening to coyotes howl and Donny being quiet :madd: we moved over here.
Bob's turn to call and on his second sequence [sounding like something from outer space] in comes a coyote running from the west [kinda where my gun's pointing in the pic above. Bob don't quit calling and he's up high enough by this time that low flying aircraft have to detour around him. That coyote went right on past and into the bush north of us. Look back west and another is galloping in and I decided with both son's higher than the sun [trying to see] that I'd better shoot. 80 yards he came to a collapse.

right on a trail he had been running across.
One for size
(http://i255.photobucket.com/albums/hh145/pitw75/Coyote%2008-09/settingsunpics012.jpg)
and one to show the caller and call.

On the way home they had to see the school their great grand dad hauled in and helped build in 1913
(http://i255.photobucket.com/albums/hh145/pitw75/Coyote%2008-09/settingsunpics016.jpg)
Still has the desk's in it.

And then the barn he built on his place 1 1/2 mile from the school

Lotta fun and thanks for looking at my rambling.
That is awesome!! I love that whole story. The kids won't know how fortunate they are for a long time and then presto........it'll all be so fond to them. :congrats:
Congrats pitw !!!! Thanks for the story and all of the pics bud ! :yoyo: :congrats: :congrats:
Jeb
Not enough calls Hmmmmmmmmm :wo:
I think that is great :yoyo: I love kids getting involved.
That is too cool :yoyo: Now there's two more addicted boys.
Cool pics of the school. Kinda weired it still has everything inside. Looks like they just up and left.
Nice job. Congrats to you and your boys. :yoyo:
That is AWESOME! Successful hunt and seeing the school and barn. What is the story with the school house still having the desks in it? A historical site?
Well to start with we have way less people around here than possibly any where in the lower 48. The school was built in 1913 and closed in 1955. The community held dances and such till about 67. We painted her in 75 for a local homecoming and put new shingles on in 88[the original ones lasted 75 years and were not leaking when we changed them]. Everybody in the community still respects the old place and kinda look after it. The barn granddad built in 17.
Barry
It won't be long your gonna be doing the calling and the boys will be doing the shooting.
Great story and pics
Thanks for sharing
Pitw,
Great story and pictures, but where do you live? I noticed the kids having jackets on already. It was still 90 degree's here yesterday.
Come on cold weather!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Hard for me to get the ambition to go when its this hot.
Congrats to everyone! :congrats:
Great story and pics! Good lookin boys ya got there. :yoyo:
"Bob's turn to call and on his second sequence [sounding like something from outer space] in comes a coyote"
What!? :shck: 10 years old and NO $600 e-caller? FauxproMinaskerWT ain't gonna be happy about that! :roflmao:
Way to go Bob!!!!!!! :highclap:
centerfire_223 we live in Alberta where the temp is 42F this morning and was 54F last evening.
Semp you won't find a $2 ecaller around me :madd:. Me and mine learn to do everything for ourselves. Our motto is "if you can't do it the hard way, you ain't trying". Any damb fool can use an "easy" button but only the prople who want to better themselves don't use it.
Thanks for the reply's guys.
Neat pictures and even better story. I liked seeing the school and hearing that it is being taken care of is great.
Jerry
pitw,
Great story and pics. Good to see you and the boys got out. Looks like a good time for all. Nice coyote!!! Good callin, Good shootin.
Jim
Cool deal!! Thanks for sharing!! Those boys look to be hooked completely if they weren't before!! :yoyo:
Barry
My Grandmother started teaching in a 1 room school house and when she retired from teaching she taught 1 more year in a one room school house
That is great Pit...its good to see some boys being brought up with those values. They will most certainly appreciate it down the road.
Alberta huh...you do any waterfowling up that way :eyebrow: :innocentwhistle:

I think this is the best story and pics I have seen all year. PLEEEZZZZZZZZ keep the stories and pics a comin :yoyo: :yoyo:
Edited for slpelingg
That's my favorite part of hunting, sharing it with the young guys and gals. Congrats to you and the boys! Keep up the good work and send us some more pictures and stories. :congrats: :congrats:
Cool story!!!!!!!!!!!! I bet the kids hooked now. :sneer: And I'm sure Braz is jazzed too. :congrats:
very nice story. Reminds me of when my two boys were that age. Mine were four yrs. apart and I took them hunting and fishintg all the time. They still hunt and fish. Take plenty of pictures as when they get older they will want to look through all of them. Your country looks similar to where I live in the Dakotas. You got yourself some fine young men and you have them started right. If only more Dad's would spend more time with their children. :congrats:
bnccont my mother came to that school to teach and I guess I'm glad she did. I think that was the reason for the education system out here to get "new blood" in the community. Must have worked somewhat as there are very few banjo pickers here :eyebrownod:.
Had a landowner call me about geese he wants off on a 40 acre field [don't know why as he has 1500 acres of more valuable crop they will move to ] so I went over for a look see this morning. On the south side of this field is a long bush then an alfalfa field, south of this is a combined and baled wheat field. I drove out in the wheat field and parked in a depression and walked up on top and sat by a bale[50 yds fro truck]. Blew a 12 second call on my new one from Alscalls
(http://i255.photobucket.com/albums/hh145/pitw75/Forum%20Pics/gamecalls026.jpg)
I'm sitting there watching the geese go by for 1 minute and 30 seconds when 2 coyotes come running out of the bush west of me and they stop 30 yards out to see if I'll shoot.
He found out the hard way and to show you how small he was
(http://i255.photobucket.com/albums/hh145/pitw75/Forum%20Pics/3af8329f.jpg)
The second coyote ran behind another bale and then used that cover to run straight away out of sight the whole time except for a 10 foot stretch as he went in the trees. The geese that were maybe 400 yards north didn't appear to mind my shooting the coyote at all.
I knew you would like that one........ :eyebrownod:
:congrats: Nice shooting too :congrats: :yoyo: :yoyo: :yoyo:
Got up early yesterday morning and Donny and I went looking for some geese to hunt. Went back to the field where I got the last coyote and parked just in the field off the road. Sat there for 1/2 an hour watching the sun come up. We were parked about 250 yds from where I shot the coyote. Donny say's let's call another one and watch the geese from that bale[about 40 yds out] So we grabbed the gun and went over to the bale [truck in full view] and settled in. I kicked the remote caller in the butt and he said "ouch" then did a 10 second sequence. 37 seconds later my remote caller [waving like a Frenchman telling you how to fly] whisper's THERE'S 2 COMING AROUND THE BUSH. Sure enough around a bush 200 yds out come these two coyotes [looked like mom and the kid] in a race. They came to about 70 yds when they stopped and I put the sights on the pup. I gently squeezed the trigger and felt the familiar thump against my shoulder. Donny asked "what the heck [edited] are you doing". No bang, I then took the safety off and tried again.
Watched geese for half an hour more and headed home as I had to spray 400 acres 30 miles north of home. On the way home we encountered another large critter that we managed to dispatch and capture on film.

Bigest dang skunk I've killed. We were only about 1/2 a mile from home and I noticed a slight odor coming off Don :puke: :puke:. Got home and jumped in my KW and headed off to work. I just took off north and made it about a mile when my cell phone rang and it was the love of my life. She wanted to discuss my heritage, intelligence, dog houses and the fact she was never cooking for me again. I accidently hit the end button and continued on to spraying thinking she's young she'll get over it.
LOL!
Thanks for sharing that.
Nice play by play, very nice :yoyo:
I'm still chuckling over him shouldering that skunk :roflmao:
That is a GREAT story! :roflmao: Nice skunk. I can't IMAGINE what the little lady was complaining about. :roflmao:
Thanks to alscalls I can go fishing now. Got home at dark last night only to have the loving lady say that a coyote had taken one of her old laying hens. I was planning on leaving to go fishing today but she said "not until you do something about the coyotes. I got the boat hooked up and truck packed then had Mandy drop me off 1/4 mile from the house. I was sitting here
(http://i255.photobucket.com/albums/hh145/pitw75/Forum%20Pics/settingsunpics044.jpg)
I took out the little call from Al and blew a very short series and 1 minute later I saw a coyote leaving the bush 400 yds away and heading in. He had to cross a little valley so I couldn't see him but knew where he would top out on the hill so I was ready when he topped the hill at 135 yds and came to a stop. I eased back on the trigger with my hole finger and Bang he fell out of site.

Nice big dog weighed in at 36lbs and Amanda is going to open him up to see if he has any chicken parts in him.
Thanks for the great freebie call Al. I can leave to go fishing now[probably was not the guilty one but the wife, Amanda and the boys can check the traps I set and shoot any that come in] so you all have a great day.
P.S. Al can you build me another 3-4 of those calls that are small and sound good.
Barry

I was sitting/standing behind the bale at the top of picture by the bush. Blew a short sequence and looked to my left and he was already at 50 yard's. Busted :hahaha:. He ran over to this spot and stopped for a look see at what had spooked him. :rolleye: Mistake.

Had time for another call today so I stopped and set up here. Wind was blowing left to right and she's laying out in line with the post.

 What are we seeing in the last pic?
Looks like a moose cow and calf in the center of the picture.
Pat
Yep that's it. There was a herd of about 40 cow's and calves and the moose must of thought she could disguise herself. Don't see them with the cattle often.
So youir saying she stopped there to take her dirt nap? :wo:
WTG Killer Pitw!
I never seen a moos before.........I would probably think it was a deformed cow and shoot it if I saw it around here... :laf:
Thanks for sharing and keep em comming!
Went over to get paid up by one of my customer's and this spot looked good on Monday.
And after a short squall on the call I saw 3 coyote's coming around the edge of the lake on the new ice, heading my way. Took this one about 2 minutes to outrun the other's right up to me [70 yds].
Other's didn't show in shooting range. Then yesterday morning I went a mile west of my house and blew a short shout of rabbit bawl's. This critter came sorta galloping in and stopped at about 85 yds.
I then walked around him and saw this had been why it galloped funny. :doh2:
Dang thing was handicapped and I didn't realize it. He weighed 43 1/2 lbs and was a top dog.
What the heck do you do for a living?
I wish I could go hunting on my way to work. :eyebrownod:
Awesome job!! :congrats: :congrats: :congrats:

Got sent to town to pick up a parcel for the wife today. Was driving by a gravel pit and thought what the heck and turned in. There was a 10 mph wind blowing and I blew on the call. 9 minutes later a coyote goes by from behind on my right, I couldn't move or he would see me. I waited until he was just leaving the area and reajusted my bipod and shooting arrangement. blew on the call and he came straight at me.
25lbs
(http://i255.photobucket.com/albums/hh145/pitw75/coyote%2009/08-09coyotehunting028.jpg)
Then driving home on a different road there was this meadow that just screamed "your wife's going to beat you". So I pulled in and sat behind a barb wire fence and 4 minute's after playing "Come Hither" on the little call in she came.
34 lbs
(http://i255.photobucket.com/albums/hh145/pitw75/coyote%2009/08-09coyotehunting029.jpg)
Yep the wife was pissed but she's young and will get over it.

Those furs look good!
Well the little call packed 'er in yesterday morning. Went out and set up to call looking over some grassland and blew on the call. It started fine then came to a screechin halt. I can blow softly but can't belt 'em out like I could before. So I happen to have a few other's around so I grabbed the first one to come to hand. Happened to be an antler closed reed I had got from braz
(http://i255.photobucket.com/albums/hh145/pitw75/Forum%20Pics/gamecalls003.jpg)
I let out with some wail's and was looking downwind when from behind me came a 35lb dog. He took off as I turned but I managed to hit him as he entered the bush.
I then turn in my seat and out a couple hundre yard's is a female 31lbs. I line up and shoot the third wire off the fence in front of me. I then have an unobstructed shot that connect's.
Then moved over to another location that is above a creek valley. There is a valley at the top that has three feeder type valley's coming together. I scream out a tune and am patiently waiting when these came by.
This what it looked like from my seat.

Your making the rest of us look silly. Keep em coming, man I cant wait till i get to get out.
The last thing I'm trying to do on this board or thread is make anyone look silly. I save that for a couple other sites. I just figure that being as I live where I do that I can show you some of what I love to do. I killed my first coyote when I was 8 with a pitch fork and being outdoors is my true love. Somehow i managed to find/make a job for myself that not only pay's the bill's, gives me 6 month's off and get's me permission on many thousand's of acres. If it comes across wrong let me know and I will quit as I sure haven't your guy's talent at most otherr thing's.
Barry

Got our first snow over night and I was itching this morning. Went over by a crick and looked this way
(http://i255.photobucket.com/albums/hh145/pitw75/coyote%2009/08-09coyotehunting059.jpg)
and like 35 sec's later this little girl[22lb] was standing at 45yds[how she got there I have no Idea] and I shot her.
Went to a second spot and got all comfortable in a great spot. Blew on the call and two guy's who are deer hunting drive up and I guess they were lonely as they sat there with the truck running, talked for 5 minute's. Asked what I was doing so I told them I was calling coyotes. "Where are they" one of them replied :doh2:.
Moved east a couple mile's and was at a favorite spot. Had the gun looking due west where I figured they'd come between two bush's. Blew on the call 3 time's in the next 30 minute's and finally a magpie came in from the southwest. I moved my gun to cover this approach and just as I got it moved there between the original bush's stood a big old dog coyote with a grin bigger than any I ever seen on a lottery winner's face. He walked into the bush leaving me wondering why I second guess myself.
Moved 1 1/2 mile's NE and set up again looking here.
After 10 min's and just after my second serie's a bigger girl[27 lb] come running from way over past the bush and came to 100yds. She stopped right out in front of that first bush.
I stopped by home and then went 4 miles north of the house and sat 1/2 a mile from where I got one last week. I was on a steep slope looking North and East
(http://i255.photobucket.com/albums/hh145/pitw75/coyote%2009/08-09coyotehunting065.jpg)
Way off just on the right side of the bush you see a coyote started running for me as soon as I started to wail. He came so fast I was sure he was racing another one[not so] for the free food. I had time to turn my weapon and be facing him and he stopped 85yds downhill from me.
:bowingsmilie: :bowingsmilie: :bowingsmilie: One bow per coyote.

Man! What a great hunt!! You are really taking it to them. What are you shooting them with?
Jim
Thank's I'm using a ruger 77V in 22-250. 40gr soft point pushed by 40gr of Winchester 760 and a magnum primer. Bob built the last 40 round's and the only miss I've had with them was the wire that was in the road.
You should do a video!!!!!!! I will be your camera man and Bop will taste the scat to see if its fresh....... :roflmao: :roflmao: :roflmao: :roflmao: Awesome job.......I wish I could see that well down here.

Pitw, I was wondering if you have an apprenticeship program, and if you would consider my application? :fingerx:

Okay compared to some it might not appear steep but when the coyote stopped I was shooting down at him and got him right between the shoulder blade's. The little 40 grainer blew the good hide right off him.
Took the wife and children to meet the bus that was taking them to the rodeo in Edmonton this morning. Coming home I came across a deer shot and left in a pasture along the road, four coyotes, 20 magpies and a dozen raven's on it. I drove right on by about 3/4 of a mile and got my set up stuff to go for a walk. I snuck through 100yds of willow's and hummuck's and 300 yd's of blow down brush, going as quiet as thistle down on a light breeze. Found the perfect spot to sit and got ready knowing It was going to get fast and furious in a second. Blew on the call, waited 10 min's, Blew on the call, waited 10 min's, Blew on the call, waited 10 min's. Nothing, what a disappointment but it prove's that you never know.
Well we go the lefsa cooked by 2pm today and Bob grabbed the howler off the tree that I got from John_NY and said "let's go give it a try". What the heck it's -8F out and we needed the air. Went over to an old farm yard 3 miles west. There was a porcupine 30ft up a tree which I figured was a good omen if he was trying to get away from coyotes.

Bob sat down in the brush on one side of a fence and I sat on the other facing downwind. He started barking and trying to howl and I started chuckling [thinking this is a waste of time]. Six minute's later 120 yd's to my right out come's this feller and I actually got him.

I stood up and Bob say's why didn't you shoot the other one. He tell's me that there were 2 that came across the field and only one crossed the fence. The other went down the fence line and I never seen it. So much for what I know and you can guess who was acting camera man again :doh2:
I think it's time to let Bob carry the gun!! Sure wish I would have started coyote hunting that young. He sure looks like a great kid! Savor every moment pitw, they grow up really fast!!
Jim
I can't wait to take my son with me too. He's got a few years yet. He's just 2. Haha, but dads got big plans.
He doesn't get to shoot the rifle yet at coyote's as he can't hold it up and keep it steady and up here you have to be 12 to get a license. I spend more time in one day hunting with my boy's than I spent hunting with my father in my life.
I will howl with you and Bob, anytime.......WTG both of ya!! :congrats: I hope ol John did not get too cold up there with ya.. :laf:

I thought he was chuckling beside me but it was probably just his teeth rattling.
:laf: :laf: teeth rattling uh? :eyebrownod:
Cold, yes. But it is a "dry" cold - just like the inside of a freezer.
Jerry

Taking them out and letting them be a major part of the hunt is so much more fun. Just don't miss when they put one on your lap as this an unforgivable act akin to being called late for breakfast. They never seem to forget the miss's :argh: :argh:
Well I took Jerry out with me today as I want to try all my call's.

I set up out on this slough [sorry there isn't more pic's but battery life and cold weather seem to go hand in hand] that border's highway 13 on the north and has willow's all around it.
I blew on the little distess call and within 2 minute's a nice big coyote came out and stood 80 yd's away. I gently squeze the trigger and felt that all to familiar shove of the gun into my shoulder as I heard CLICK again. Chambered up a round and he was gone but I saw another off to my left just inside the willow's. She stopped where I guess she thought she was hid [wrong] and I felt a better thud at the squeeze of the trigger.
I then went to a hay field a mile from town [I was going for the mail] and sat against a fence and let out with the distress again [go with what's working] and I truly don't know where he come from but within 5 minute's [before I could try the howl] this fellow came galloping in and stopped dead at 60 yd's.
Thought you might want to see his head as I was done for the day I still have to go out and try the howler.
