Title: I Missed
Post by: Bills Custom Calls on November 01, 2008, 08:24:47 AM
I left the house early about 8 am walked about 2 minutes from the house and set down on the ground.
Notched an arrow and layed the bow down beside me.Took out a doe bleat and a buck grunt from my pocket,
and started with a doe bleat. Then waited about 3 minutes and hit the bleat again and answered with 4 short deep buck grunts. Now I have movement in the woods and I hear a loud snap of a branch and I knew for sure there was a deer coming in.Now I need to figure out which way is it gonna be a 30 yard shot or a 50 yard shot.
This deer is moving very slowly, and only moving after I call. The way it sounds it is coming in for a 30 yard shot.  An airplane flies over and I can't hear any movement for a minute or 2.I started Calling again once I could hear and there at 50 yards appears one of the biggest whitest racks then a very nice bodied deer walking out of the woods and into a little clearing.I let the arrow fliy and hear the arrow hit  :yoyo: the deer makes 2 leaps and stops  I am thinking it is a hit but don't rush it.I hit the bleat a few more times and watched the deer go down over the hill, once he was out of site I walk over to where he stood for the shot and in a sapling sticks my arrow  :argh:  :shck:  :rolleye: From what I could see this big boy was a 12 point and I have a spot on the wall for this head. I will try again tomorrow moring.I can't go this evening I will let him sleep this one off

Bill,

If I leave now I might be able to be there in time to shoot at him tonight so that he can stay in practice for you in the morning.  Just a thought.     But with my crossbow I will need to get him in to about 30 yards.

Around here they are finishing off the corn, which will really help.  I had a doe and a yearling headed my way last evening when some fool walks out and scares them.  I had watched him a couple of nights ago do the same thing.  On my way back to town I saw a group of four, a group of about 10, and then (on a curve of all places) a doe and a good sized buck just starting to come out of a corn field.  I couldn't check the rack very well and drive, but the neck was huge.

Jerry
If you get down here I would have to take you with Chris and I to meet up with Hamer and Diane to celebrate
Chris' birthday. You are More then welcome

But now that I know the deer prefer that route I will move a little closer next time

I went back after him this morning and wasn't 200 ft from the house and I spooked him.

I realy didn't pay much attention to him I just kept on walking to get ahead of him.I knew where he was going.
I did get there before he did but he was already on alert.

I could see him standing in the weeds and he kept looking behind him but I was in front of him about 200 yards.
I got set up and waited about 5 minutes and I watched him and he kept looking back I thought it was a good time to hit the bleat.WRONG He made a left turn and all I seen was the white flag waving BYE BYE.

I will let him go now for a week and let things settle down and will do some thinking on a completely different set up

Yes I have Al he gets some shelled corn every once in awhile. That is why he hangs around here so much
plus the cover he has to roam around and not be seen is another.
