Title: Meat Down...
Post by: alscalls on December 06, 2008, 08:31:21 PM
Ol Nick and I were out ...... going for some meat and wala :eyebrownod: I had to make mine hard  cause it was so small so...
190 yds says the range finder.....(6mm...smack! right in the head) As it came in it saw us and started to spook so I hit Bills custom bleat a couple of times and it lay down to watch us  :eyebrow: I set my gun on shooting sticks and the bi pod for a four legged rest and BANG! Nick watched the whole thing. as we approached the deer the other one jumped up for a double bang of a day... :yoyo: :yoyo: :yoyo: :yoyo: We were sitting to the right of the farthest tree....I am standing where the deer was laying.
The tracking was tough but we managed...She musta went 10 inches :laf:
The other ran some but not out of site  So we loaded them up........
Took em over to the cleaning site away from the cows.........Cut out the milk sacks.......
Making a small cut for my fingers ...careful not to cut a gut, I pulled with two fingers on the belly meat to make room for my knife to unzip her.
When I got to the breast bone I went to the left a bit and cut through the rib bones ....If it were to be mounted I would stop cutting here.
following the throat tube all the way to the chin I cut it off here to use as a handle for pulling out the entrails slowly till I get to the diaphragm just below the heart and lungs.....
Slowly detached the diaphragm (thin layer of meat between guts and heart/lungs) careful not to cut a gut.
Now I can gently roll the guts out of the cavity...leaving the anus attached so when I pull gently on it it will reveal the bladder...This one was empty or I would have twisted it off so it would not leak and removed it.
I split the pelvic bone and remove the anus......
Now we are ready to go home for the skinning  A lot of folks ask how to do this.....I hope this helps someone.
What a fun day......
And a little .308 squack hunting on the way back... :roflmao:
We could not help it...... it was self defense. :eyebrownod:

Good post :yoyo: :yoyo:  If that don't help somebody then ther's no help for some people.  Congrat's on the deer and I like the head shot for not wasting meat.

Good write up Al! :congrats:

Never went that far up for the wind pipe, but then again I never brain panned a deer.

Why didn't you brain pan the squirrel too?

I was not using my .308 VV :nono:....I loaned it to Nick :eyebrownod: He aimed for the heart....an even smaller target. I think he hit it...
Going that far up with the throat tube makes it free from spoiling the neck meat while hanging with the head cut off....then when I cut the front shoulder off, I just continue down the side of the neck for some good burger meat.
