The old rule of thumb is their teeth. Rich Higgins had it all figured out and posted some stuff a while back with images etc.
I'm not sure if it was here or what, I'll have to do some checking.

Using teeth makes sense.  That's the way deer are aged.

I always go by there teeth. I have seen coyotes that looked young or old but there teeth usually tell the tale. I did have a bunch of pictures of coyotes teeth but have lost them in the computer swapping it over.

I do believe Higgins would be good at explaining how to age a coyote. We killed one several years ago and I aged it at 7 years old and sent the pics to Higgins and he aged it at 7 years old. I have killed some coyotes that appeared to be 1 year or less old but after looking at there teeth determined they were 2 years or better. I have also seen coyotes that looked old but were really only a year old.

Missing teeth are not a good indicator a coyote is old there are alot of gum diseases that can cause this. Once they lose some of there teeth it causes the remainder ones to wear much faster. Also a bout with the mange will wear the teeth down very badly.

I will try and start taking pics of the teeth and age some here. It kinda like when we age cattle to buy you get a knack for what you are looking for.

I wish Higgins would respond to this, he had some top notch info and diagrams. Very well layed out stuff.
