It's my first turn that wasn't closet rod or white oak :biggrin:

Finished call. I don't really like the finish on it. It's still Deft. I think I like the natural wood better.
I might strip it down and put an oil finish on it. Dumb idea?

I use a friction oil finish and like it alot
I have used a ca finish before they really shine with it Just becareful not to get it to hot and don't smell the fumes
Al, I haven't tried the CA finish yet. I've read a couple threads thought and it sounded like it was pretty hard to master. I'll do some more reading on it though.
Bill, when you say "friction oil finish" are you using special oil, or can I use the Watco I already have? And I assume you are turning it in at high speed to create the friction and heat?

I printed out a tutorial on finishing and they used that brand a lot. Must be good stuff.

Watco is not a friction polish. It is a penetrating oil. The first couple of coats will start to seal the wood and after that it will start to build, but not like friction polish. If you use Watco, make sure that the call and the Watco are at least room temperature or you will have a sticky mess. Also, don't put Watco on too thick, or again you will have a sticky mess. If you are using an open grain wood and have not filled the grain, use the Watco Wax as a final finish to get a little nicer look. Watco has colored waxes to match the finish and you won't get the grain filled with paste wax that will show up white in the grain.
