Title: Bomb went off in the Woods
Post by: KySongDog on February 25, 2009, 07:49:43 PM
I went down to the farm I turkey and deer hunt on today and WOW!  It looks like a bomb went off.  The west KY ice storm devastated the woods.        It absolutely made me sick.   The roads through the woods were impassable.  Tops of trees and branches are down everywhere.  Whole trees are uprooted.   I don't think a tornado would have done this much damage.

I don't know what this will do to the turkey and deer population.      :sad3:

As much as I hate to see a woods destroyed by Mother Nature
It should increase the turkey and deer population in time.It will give them more hiding places.
The coyotes should be there more also

That'd sure make the heart sink.   :rolleye:   We've had some pretty strong winds go through
one of our timbers before. I'm sure it wasn't to the degree you're talkin though. It definitely  changed
some trails and other things around, but it's as good as ever as far as deer and turkey populations go.
Sounds like you got your work cut out for ya this year cleanin up. Sorry it happened.

Things will be changed for sure, but as others have said, it will be good for the wildlife. With so many places to hide, you'll probably be seeing more big bucks in 2 or 3 years.

I hope all of you are right about increasing the wildlife over time.  At least something positive may happen from all of this.   I have resisted logging that property for years and now feel I made a huge mistake.   A lot of money went up in smoke when the ice came down.

Me and a buddy are going back later this week or next to start trying to clear the roads between fields.  I'll get some pics then and post them.   Once I get access to the fields again I can start cutting all of the limbs and trees that fell in to the fields.  He has a tractor with an end loader on it.

The woods are going to be dangerous for a long time to come.  Lots of "widow makers" hanging from trees everywhere you look.

A few year ago a real bad ice storm hit us in WV.  Everything looked horrible and it was alot of work.  On the positive side the grouse and turkey population is twice as good today as what is was before the ice storm.

That will most certinly improve the habitat for the critters just like everybody said. You probably won't notice immediately, but 2-3 years down the road you should.

There was a microburst that occurred a few years ago south of where I live and it did look like a tornado went through. Trees were everywhere. There was a lot $$$ lost due to that, but it created fantastic habitat by mother nature.

Jerry came home from Mississippi Monday and he had went down there before the ice storm.

he said it was hard to believe it was the same area he had driven through just 6 weeks before.
