Title: Second Cat
Post by: Carolina Coyote on March 05, 2009, 10:26:07 AM
A couple of weeks ago I was down at the Hunt Club in Georgia and Ronnie (Centerfire223) was working at a job a couple of hours drive away and I was feeling better after having the Gall Bladder surgery and was anxious to get out and do some calling. I called Ronnie and he said he would not be working on Sunday and he could drive over on Saturday evening and we could Hunt Sunday. We were up before Daylight Sunday morning having a cup of Coffee and planing where to hunt. The weather man was saying that winds would be 15 to 20 mph which was not good but we decided " can't kill anything sitting on the porch" . We decided to make the first setup were Ronnie killed a Coyote last year. After hanging a ball of Fur and sitting the remote EC out about 30 yards Ronnie started the set-up with his favorite call  and then switched to the EC , after a few minutes of calling I saw a Big Owl flying in toward the EC, shortly after I saw movement in the woods out in front of me but could not tell what it was, then I heard the crack of Ronnie's 223. At that time I did not know what he had shot but when I stepped out of the woods and saw the big grin I knew he had connected. His second Bobcat, Ronnie said he was sure something was coming in as the Owl kept looking back in the direction the Cat came from. By this time the wind was blowing pretty hard and shifting around but we made 3 more set-ups on this property with no more luck. After the last set-up we discovered between where he was sitting and I was sitting was a  Deer carcase ( full grown Doe ) that appeared by the sign to have been Killed by Coyotes. At that time we took a break for lunch hoping the wind would calm down a bit.
After a couple of hours we went back out to another piece of property that we hunted last year and Ronnie killed a Fox on the first set-up, this year we set-up the same way, after several minutes of calling I detected movement to my left , cutting my eyes around that way I saw a Grey Fox almost on top of me, he was looking at where the call was coming from and did not see me, I waited until he got past me and I slowly turned and took my shot at less than 10 yards. Bang Flop. The wind really started to pick up at this time, we tried a few more set-ups but no luck. After a total of 8 set-ups on a windy day and still get a Bobcat and Fox was a good days hunt.
Ronnie has been predator hunting for several years and has called in and killed several Coyotes but until this year had only called in 1 Bobcat, This year in a total of 10 set-ups he has called in 3 Bobcats one of which I missed and one of which he missed and killed the last one. It was a good days hunt and I enjoyed it very much. cc
