Title: Absolutely nothing to do with hunting.
Post by: pitw on March 07, 2009, 09:54:36 AM
Well it's that time of year again and the feedlot's are starting to give away their new borns.  Bob is going to use this one as a 4H project that they are starting this year.  Pail bunting to finish is sorta what it is about.  Here's a couple pics of his new friend cuddles.

Here's a couple pics of three of them they have left of the 23 we got last year.

Thanks for the pictures Barry, my wife was in 4H when she was a young, it is a great program.  How is everything going on the plains of Alberta, ready for Spring yet.

Well today Bob had to weigh his calf.  Being in 4H means to do by doing so I spent a good portion of an hour enjoying watching the learning process in my boy.  He isn't strong enough to lift it up and step on a scale and we don't have a platform scale he could use.  So he came up with this method and by golly it worked.

It did take a little modifying but that's part of the fun :laf:.

Cool. :congrats:
I wish they'd make 4h mandatory. It teaches the kids so much, and gives them an opportunity to feel good about something with real accomplishments.
Much different then Xbox high scores, skateboards, and that damn punk music.

Kudos to Bob :congrats: And you for raising the way you do Barry

Jim if 4H was mandatory it would be goverment controled and that wouldn't work.  My wife put's as much time in as a leader as some people put into a full time job.  It is a great program and more people need to get into it.
Al she weighs 83lb and the two tool belts and gambrel weigh 7 lb.
msmith they only look cute until you have to go and flat ass a couple hundred head.

Never had to do a couple hundred, but I know what you mean. We got three that are going in the barn this eve and Big Dawg is going to band them.

Great post, It's nice to see young people working with animals. I think it builds a better person down the road.  We have had the FFA kids to our farm and I will tell you I was IMPRESSED with the young people.  :highclap:

linemansteve you are right there are some great young people out there.  One thing about 4H up here is that when young people apply for a job at say 19 years of age and the employer see's on their resume' that they have 10 years in 4H it'll be that person that gets the job and the time off if they are still active.  They know the kids have learned the responsibilities that got them through the program and it usually translates into a good work ethic.

That's pretty cool Barry. When I was a kid I use to work on my aunt and uncles farm. Moved here and worked on a farm during the summers. I enjoyed that kind of thing.

You have a good way of life Barry.

Thankyou Bop :whew:  I'm kinda/sorta afraid to open a thread I've started when I see you have replied as with my always chewing me a new one, I'm kinda scared of more bites :innocentwhistle:.  I looked around for a long time before picking this style and it is slower than most but enjoyable.  I mean how many people can say they have a house pet like this.

Like a true cow the heat of the house [just like bringing a milk cow into the barn] got it's I gotta go now thing happened.
You want to hear holler just have your wife screamming at you at 3 am that there is a major problem outside and you jump up and jump in your pants only to find the cuffs sewn shut.  As your jaw contacts the dresser on the way to meet the floor is when the hollering starts.
He did enjoy the site didn't he. :laf:

Barry,

Great thing that you are allowing your son to participate in.  I did "show" rabbits for 4H, but don't think I could raise them for "sale."  There were a few farm kids (I lived in the BIG city - about 1200 people) that raised feeder steers and a few of them had trouble when it came time to sell them.  After a couple of years, they learned not to get attached to them and look at them only as a project.

Sarah the first calf seems to have got some kind of joint infection.  Not a good pic of it but you can see how big her left front knee joint is.

The wife said I could go talk to the feedlot owner about a few more calves for the boys now [could be because shes leaving for a few days].  Talked to the straw boss Calvin and told him what I needed,  I didn't get out of the lot when my phone rang telling me to go to pen G3.  Brand spanking new out of the box bull calf.

Have to get the cholostrum milk in them within hours for it to help the calf with anti bodies to fight off all the bad stuff in the outside world.

Back up plans are as good for 4H as they are for business.  The little feller follows the boys all over the yard this morning.

Thats cool Barry. Kids should grow up around critters, it makes them a lil better in the end.

I enjoyed the calf hanging by the tool belts.  :roflmao:
