KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (AP) -- The man who regarded himself as the last of the true hillbillies has been buried after apparently committing suicide rather than going to prison for moonshining.

Marvin "Popcorn" Sutton of Parrottsville, Tenn., was 62. His wife says she came home Monday and found him dead in his old Ford. Authorities suspect carbon monoxide poisoning. Sutton had been ordered to report to federal prison in Georgia to serve 18 months after pleading guilty to illegally producing distilled spirits and being a felon in possession of a gun.
He was buried in his native North Carolina Wednesday in a pine coffin he bought years ago and kept in his bedroom.
Sutton wrote a book called "Me and My Likker," spelled with two "Ks," and recorded videos on how to make moonshine.
He got the knickname "Popcorn" because he once beat up a popcorn machine in a bar with a pool cue.
If you are addicted to the History channel as I am you will recognize him. I think this is a real shame. Alot of history lost with his passing.
If anyone has a copy of his book I would be interested in reading it.

There ain't many folks like Popcorn left now-a-days. Rumor has it that at one time he was running 3 - 1000 gallon stills. He will be missed.
Let me know when Bill I got something we can put in a glass.....that is worthy of raising to a man like popcorn...
There was a TV special on the History channel about a month ago featuring moonshining and the hillbilly lifestyle. Popcorn was one of the featured hillbilly folk. What a sad day. :sad:

That is some sad news indeed. If anyone finds the book I'd like to be borrowing it.
Never heard of him, but interesting for sure.

That is a bit pricey ain't it. Anyone want to buy it as I'll kick in to help out? Kinda/sorta got my interest up now. :shrug:
I've never read the book but had seen the history of moonshine on TV and it was fascinating.
