Title: Shot two turkeys this week
Post by: SCcoyotehunter on April 03, 2009, 07:32:37 AM
I have not killed very many turkeys before so I have not become very selective yet. However, this is the first time that I have killed turkeys alone and called them in by myself. Here is a picture of the bird I shot on April 1st
(http://i368.photobucket.com/albums/oo125/FastenalFishing/0402091003_011.jpg)
It had a 6" beard but almost no spurs. It had to little nubs, about 3/8". I shot him at 10 yds with a Remington 870 and jelly head choke. After I shot a second bird flew up and provided an excellent shot but I passed on that oppurtunity.
On April 2nd I called in 2 more and actually made them fly across a river. I felt like this was an accomplishment in itself.
This bird started a big circle around me and I shot him at about 35yds. Dropped him right there. The second bird again gave me another chance but I passed again. Here is the pic of the second bird.

This bird was a little different he had a 4" beard and 3/4" spurs and 16lbs.

Hopefully my next post will be a long beard.
Good luck to everyone.

I don't know but I doubt the beards are all that good to eat   The spurs are probably a mite tough too   Good going on the birds and I hope you can describe the taste to me.

Nice goin fastenal!!! What state are you in? I just got back from S. Carolina and seen more Jakes than ever in my life..Also seen some gators, that was cool.

That tail on your second bird looks full, you sure it wasn't a two year old that had beard rot?  3/4 inch spurs seem long for a jake, not that I'm questioning your measurement, more so the age of your bird, I think you got your longbeard already, he was just lackin on the beard length??

Looks like a two year old to me also.   On a jake the four feathers in the middle will protrude more than the rest of the fan feathers.

Anyways, congratulations on your birds!   :congrats:

Blacky posted a pic somewhere on how to age a turkey and you boys are right that is probably a 2 yr. old bird.
Check the very tips of the beard closely and you will see a redish brown color to a beard that has what some call beard rot or red rot........it is actually caused by a mite.

Canine,
I'm in South Carolina. In the upstate, Spartanburg County. I believe he had beard rot also. The tip of the beard had yellow almost looked like it had been singed.
