Anyone remember that song? I know it was a long time ago when it was being played. But after playing a tune on this new bird call that I got from Brent, it made me think of it.
Since the big storm that dumped snow on the western states is suppose to be headed our way. I thought today would be a good morning to go out and make a few stands. So I headed out to the farm that I posted the pictures of in the hunting setup's post.
I started out right at daybreak on a stand the THO pointed out on the picture. It is a small clearing inside the wood edge. I really expected to call a coyote in on this stand but after about 20 minutes I gave up. I made two more dry stands. Ever stand I had made so far had be calling on the field edges. So I decided to go in a little deeper into the woods. I walked into the woods to the creek bottom. I setup on the hill about 30 yards from the creek.
Two of the previous stands I had made this morning, I was directing the sound into this hollow. So I really didn't expect anything to come from that way. So when I setup I focused my attention on down the creek.
I started the stand off with two long howls from my howler that I got from Brent. After a couple of minutes I started doing the bird on my call. I had only been calling for about 3 minutes when I heard the familiar sound of a coyote running in the leaves. I looked to my left and here he come, he had no idea where I was at. If I hadn't barked at him he would have ran right on past me. But the bark stopped him and I popped him with the .223 at about 30 yards. I can't remember when I have had a coyote coming that hard to the call. He had the hair standing up on his back, must have been ready for a fight. Here is a picture of the stand from where I was sitting. The red arrow is where the coyote was standing when I shot and the blue arrow is the direction he came from.

It was some pretty thick woods where I was calling from but he just so happen to come to the only open area that was there. He is a big male coyote, I guess he would way about 40 or so pounds. Here are a couple of more pictures. You know the glory shots. Hope you enjoy them.

Ronnie was useing a bird distress closed reed call I just made for him last week. Its made out of Zercote wood but has the ball style mouth piece. I made one for JD and one for JB, and Ronnie has the third one.

Steve, I am going to have to talk to you. I want to know how to make a kitten sound with this call. Even though my call isn't a black bird I bet it will make it. If I only knew how, I was amazed at Brent and JD last year at the LBL. Showing me how to make a closed reed call sound like I chicken. I had never even thought about trying to make it sound like that.

Most of the timber around here is thick like that. There is very little virgin hardwoods any more. That is why I like staying out near the edges to do my calling. I hunt by myself 90% of the time and it seems I don't be busted as bad if I stay on the edges. I can use the funnels to my advantage that away, gives me less to have to try and cover.
After doing some thinking about yesterdays hunt, I have come to a conclusion that sound just don't carry as far as you think it does. I called into this particular hollow three different stands but every time I was at least 300 yards from the actual hollow. I was calling from the high ground and I think the sound may have just sailed right over the tops of the hollow and not really penetrated down deep in it. Then when I got down into the hollow and made a stand it really rang out into it.
Another thing that popped into my mind as I thought about this stand. Something I did but didn't do on purpose. At least not intentionally, maybe it was just something that has been taught from the beginning of my hunting career. I setup up on the point where 3 different hollows came together.
This is for any new caller we have here, but this really increases your odds of having something hear your sounds. The more avenues you can call to at one time, the more chances you have for something to respond. Sorry for rambling.

Excellent story and pics. Ever since I read it, I've been thinking about this bird call thing.
I need a call like that. If it can make bird, kitten and a chicken sound.............I'd only need three calls on my lanyard...........yeah right. :iroll:

We will make sure you get the oppurtunity to do that very thing while we are at the LBL. Brent and JD can make those calls do some amazing sounds.

Ronnie, I was reading you post op about your hunt and you made some very points. Calling in an area where three or more hollers run together to get the sound out there to as many areas as possible.

When I first started calling I went 3 years before I ever called up my first coyote. I was the only one around here that coyote hunted, so I had to learn everything from the school of hard knocks and from what I could read on the net. Then I got to talking on the phone to a person that is on this board. I would go out and scout a farm then come and give him a call, telling him everything I found and seen. This person gave his time up freely, sort of took me under his wing so to speak. I scouted this particular farm on Tuesday, then talked to him that night. We worked up a game plan which I intended to try out on Friday. Well long story made short, I called up my first coyote that day. Was it just my time or was it from the help of a good coyote hunter? I vote for the last one.
If we would take the time to type up these post such as this and list as many details as we can when we hunt. I am certain it will help a new coyote hunter to put some of the pieces together and maybe make his learning curve a little bit shorter. I am certainly going try and keep it up with any setup posts I make.

Amen to that!! I guess I'll have to start writing about things more instead of just keeping it to myself.
Ole' Jimmie helped ya get your first one eh? He's a dang good coyote hunter for sure. Now if he would allow me 30 minutes alone with that secret map of his............I'd be doing good at the LBL. :biggrin:
