Any opinions on THIS particular unit? I just want a basic GPS unit. The problem I have with this one is that I don't understand the difference between the "WAAS system enabled" yet it says under the "Compare handheld GPS units" tab it says WAAS Compatible "NO".

First off, I would only get one of the newer generation "high sensitivity" receivers. HCX I think they are called. Works much better under tree cover.
This is the one I would get. Garmin eTrex Vista HCx
Google Garmin GPS 72 and you will find reviews. It is a basic so-so receiver. Spend a little more and I think you will be more satisfied in the long run.
Of course, YMMV.

I wish I would have worded my original post a little differently to add I'm just looking for a unit to get me back to my truck after a hunt. I was in unfamiliar territory this spring chasing Gobblers & ALMOST got lost. Not quite as I was able to stop, reflect,& return along my original path to almost where I had started from. Luckily I was able to stay calm. I'm thinking one of these might come in handy at the LBL with everything looking so jumbled.
Thanks!!
Glen,
They do help! I use mine to find the way to the bathroom at night. Just turn it on when I go before going to bed and then hit the retrack when I need to go during the night.

I would think if you really were afraid of getting lost then a gps system of some type would be good[I'd recommend extra batteries though]. I guess if I had had one a few times I might not of had to spend a couple nights out in the bush[would have missed that]. One place they may be handy is on the big water and water where there are a lot of islands and channels as it kinda/sorta all looks the same when you are turned about. Wouldn't have found a few good holes if I had used one though as I would have retraced my steps[so to speak] and not wandered off snooping.
All you gotta do is write the FnF administrator and beg for forgiveness....... :roflmao: :roflmao: :roflmao: You aint lost you knucklehead you are banned....... :roflmao: :roflmao: :roflmao:
:laf: Jerry & Al!!
I hadn't thought about the extra batteries but I'll definitely keep that in mind. I want to go to Southern Ohio & look for hogs in the Wayne Nat'l Forest this winter. Won't be near as much fun if I can't get back to my truck tho. :laf:
I think I'm gonna hold off for right now & look at some of the slightly more expensive models before I make a decision.
Thanks!! :yoyo:
This one looks like it would be a viable option.

I've got one of the low end Garmin E-Trex. I used it a lot when I used to grouse hunt. I could mark my truck then turn it off and stick it in my pocket. Then turn it on later and point the way back to the truck.
Thats what I need Ed!! :yoyo:
The newer models are a lot more sensitive. I had an older garmin but it was useless under tree canopy. Went in and out. I got rid of it.
Semp-- So is the 2nd one I posted older or newer & would it be a good choice? Thanks!!
That is one of the newer ones. It has the HC designation for high sensitivity. I would choose it over the first one you posted about. It is a good basic unit. I see Cabelas has a bunch of reviews. I would read through them and see what others have to say about it.
Will do & Thank You kindly Sir!!
One of the reviews said this unit was discontinued. I'm gonna call them & see if I can talk to a real person about it.
Thank You all for your comments & thoughts. :yoyo:
I decided to spend a little more coin than I originally planned but I'm happier with this unit I believe.

OH NO !! :doh2: You didn't hear about that one ?!? :rolleye:
Any one but that one ! :nofgr: :holdon:
:innocentwhistle:
Looks like it'll git r done ! Nice. :yoyo:
So far so good. I haven't used it much but on the couple ocasions that I have used it it seems to be accurate for what I'm doing. I really like the wildlife activity button. When it says wildlife is the most active it purdy much is. We see more deer now just by riding around when it says the time is right for movement.
Good deal.
and you could share that activity information with us if ya wanna. :innocentwhistle: :eyebrownod:
I could but I don't have your coordinates. :nono:
