Title: Spikey hairdos are in style
Post by: Okanagan on August 16, 2009, 07:32:54 PM
Wet grouse after rain.  Spruce grouse I think, possibly a ruffed.

It looks a lot like a ruffed to me also, so your comment motivated me to look up ruffed and spruce on the web.  It is a hen, and had some half or 3/4 grown chicks with it, all of them wet and bedraggled.  I called it a spruce grouse in my first post mainly because of how tame it was.  Spruce let you do things like get within a few feet to take a picture, or kill them with a rock.  Ruffed are way more wild in my experience.

From the web photos I'd stick with spruce as likely.

I eat them all:  ruffed, spruce and blues.  We saw all three kinds that day.
