Title: Another Coyote
Post by: JohnP on August 20, 2009, 12:38:23 PM
This guy is about 25 yards from the caller and I'm about 25 yards and a bit above him.  He is at full alert and I do have my rifle with me.  As I eased the camera down it bumped ever so slightly on my shirt button.  He disappeared in no time at all, never had time to put the camera completely down.

I've killed enough coyotes in my lifetime that if I never kill another one that's fine with me.  I been doing this for 50 years or so.  Heck at only 20 per season (slow season) that's 1000 dead coyotes.  Heck anyone can take a picture of a dead coyote the challenge is taking pictures of live ones.

JohnP, I really enjoy your photographs.  You seem to capture them at those "unique" moments.  Sort of where their bodies are paused, just before they react.... Pretty cool!

Well Dan I still have it but can't rightly remember the last time I shot it.  I've had my little Sako Vixen going on 28 years and find it rather difficult not to reach for it when I open the safe.  Then there is the new Rem 7 Predator and ArmaLite these damn decisions are getting hard on this old man.   See ya in New Mexico :nono:

My wife bought it for me in 1982.  I have used it for everything from PD & Ground Squirrel  to Coues & Mules deer.  It shoots a 55grain .223 Sierra or Nosler with unbelievable accuracy as well as factory 55 grains  Rem.

With John P's permission, I ran his picture through some picture editing software and enhanced it some.  Thought some of you guys might like it too.

I've come across two Vixens for sale & both were 222Mag.
I was about to hand over my arm & leg on the last one when the guy that put it up for consignment came in & took it back because his son was pissed & wanted it. :doh2:  I'm talking about at that very moment! :madd:  :madd:  :madd:  :sad2:

Well not everyone can take a picture of a dead coyote, some folks have never called one up or had the opportunity to get a shot at one, never have hunted in the west and the only thing I know is what I've read or what some one has told me and that is the Easter Coyotes are tougher to call in, we don't kill many but every once in awhile we get lucky and that is why I never pass up a shot when its presented, I think the real challenge would be to do a photo op before and after, Thanks for posting the pictures and with all your experience there has to be lots of good stories and techniques to help us novices out.cc

I don't want to get into a pissing match here but I don't think a eastern coyote is any harder to call than a western coyote.  I think the problems is that you just don't have near as many as we do and your terrain is considerably harder to call in.  You have probably called in more coyotes than you realize, just didn't see them before they saw you, smelled you or heard you.  I have called and killed coyotes in a number of eastern states and southeastern states.  Two years ago while visiting family in PA I called one using my brother-in-laws FoxPro.  I sat up in a deer stand with the FP out about 30 yards in front and within 5 minutes had one come in.  He said he had called in that area on a regular basis and never saw one, but he was sitting on the ground and had a very limited view.  Try getting up in a tree stand, maybe 6 feet or so, if you have a e-caller place it about 30 yards in front of ya and give it a try.  Make sure you have your camera with ya for that before and after shot.

P.S.
I have a few before and after photo's I'll post some.

I don't see any difference in east or west coyotes  :innocentwhistle:  They come in about the same from each direction when I call.

More great pictures, John.  Your idea about hunting from an elevated position will definitely help you about anywhere.  There is that one fellow who uses a ladder setup in Arizona, and I think some of his buddies followed his example.  I like to sit on higher ground with the ecaller on lower ground a good distance away, increasing the playing field as much as possible.  Keep up the pictures, especially those with dead yotes in them.  :congrats: :congrats:

Thanks possumal.  I used a ladder long before the internet made them famous.  However, now that I'm pushing 69 years of age I am carrying less and less into the field and I sure as heck don't want to fall off one anymore.  I don't recommend them for us "seasoned" callers but the younger guys will find them useful.

John, I think it is real neighborly for you to call us old farts "Seasoned".  I go along with you on that falling out of tree stands or off ladders.  Sometimes the terrain won't let you get on higher ground, but most of our country lends itself to that kind of setup.  Even 5 or 6 feet higher can make all the difference.

I remember that THO Al advocated hunting from a tree stand.  I have killed coyotes while deer hunting (like a lot of folks here have done) but have not tried calling from an elevated stand.  Going to have to give that a try.  Since I'm a lot younger than you guys (pushing 62) I think I can handle a tree stand.

JohnP, I was not intending get into any kind of pissing contest, just stating what I had read and heard, I do call from elevated stands a lot and have called a few in but seem to get busted every time, better luck with Bobcats from elevated stands, I think Coyotes may be a little smarter than Cats, I am 68 and only been Predator hunting about 5 years and really enjoy calling them in. cc

If you are using an e-caller and have the coyote pup in distress call on it I would suggest you try it.  It is a good sound to use at any time but particularly good at this time of the year.  Turn it on and let it scream at about half volume for as long as you would normally stay on stand.  If you should see one coming in reduce the sound level but don't stop it.

You will get no argument from me when you say coyotes are smarter than cats.  I think the reason more aren't killed is that they are sneaky little suckers.  I'll start a new topic with a picture of one that I could literally and figuratively  reach out and touch.
