There's A LOT of that after the boat drops you off. It takes about two hours on that boat to get from the start point (Crane Lake, MN) to the drop off point. That includes going through Customs, over two of those mechanical portages, and stopping at the Ranger station to get permits and licenses.

What controls that trolley? I expected to see a big rope or chain get tight and come up when the guy waved his hand to go ahead.

If you look really close at the beginning of the video you can see a cable and chain connected to a toggle on the bottom of the cart. It is powered by an old tractor engine and transmission that turns a big cable spool under the high point in that track. The operator runs the cable out on one side till the cart is under the boat, then reels it back up. The momentum carries it over the high point and the toggle flips. The operator then shifts to reverse and lets the cable out in the other direction. You can see the toggle again at the end of the video as the cart goes over the high point. Its pretty cool to watch in action.
