Title: First of the Year
Post by: JohnP on September 12, 2009, 12:50:28 PM
This season is going to be kinda slow for me as my recovery from foot surgery is not going as planed.  Wife is getting kinda of PO'd with all my complaining so she said jump in the Blazer I'll drive ya around the desert for a while.  Got in my hunting clothes, grab caller and rifle and off we went.  We stopped at  the first place where I noticed she could park/hide the vehicle and I could walk a short distance and sit.  I was in an area that I had called before and had even seen a  mountain lion in.  About 5 minutes into calling I noticed some movement about 100 yards in front of me.  Bobcat came sneaking into the call, at about 50 yards he stopped and sat and then he died.

On the way out I said why don't we stop for one more stand. The result of the one more stand:

When I got back into the Blazer I said:  "Whatchya doing tomorrow morning?"  That didn't go over to good.

John P, that is just way cool!  Hard to get those gals talked into those rear early a.m. stands  :laf: :laf:.  Glad you got out and had the good luck. Got to speed up your recovery.  That kitty looks like an extra nice one.  Kudos to you and the wife for transporting you.  :congrats: :congrats:

Well now you know how to get the Mrs to take you hunting dont ya :eyebrownod:
Thats kinda funny. So what'd she do while you was on a stand?

Sounds like those critters was a waiting for ya. I cant hop in the truck and go whack a couple at a moments whim to relieve some cabin fever like that.

Congrats on the yote & cat.

Its seems odd seeing desert & cactus in the pics. I'd be lost as an easter egg with that kind of visabillity.

Yeah, it kinda makes it easy to understand a bunch of those guys using those ladder setups.  I like the idea of being above those darned buzztails out there too.  I don't guess I fear them as much as copperheads since they will warn you, but I don't want to nestle up to any bush or ledge that is home to those rascals!   :rolleye: :rolleye:

Jim - She sat in the Blazer and enjoyed the country side on the first stand.  When I told her I shot a bobcat she got pissed as she has never seen a live one in the wild.  So on the second stand she came and sat with me.   She again got pissed when a coyote came in as she has seen a lot of them.  Seems it was a bad morning for her, the bobcat and the coyote but a good one for me.

Todd - I killed that coyote with my 17Rem, you would be hard pressed to find the entrance hole and there is no exit hole, killed him at about 75 yards.  I'll have to verify the distance with my wife as she went out and carried him back to the vehicle, and she did likewise with the cat, now if I can only convince her to do the skinning. I can imagine payback is going to be expensive.

As far as that nice looking call.  I bought it from a member of this board many years ago when he was selling calls on the other board.

Yes sir ya did, and its a dandy. Have a few myself.

I was joke'n about the coyote to add emphasis to the call.

I would like to get me a nice .17 Rem for my calling. but ya can't seem to find them very well up here.  :doh2: When I go to get ammo for other things, theres plenty of .17 Rem sitting on the shelf and all the other slots are empty.  Maybe I should load up on it while its there and buy the rifle when I find a good'n.  :wo:

She and I have been together for many years, 49 this coming Dec not counting the High School years.  Wouldn't trade her in for anything - well maybe a brown bear hunt, but nothing less.

Todd - I'm not sure but I don't think any of the major gun companies are making the 17Rem anymore, other than Sako/Tikka.  I'd sell ya mine but my son already has his name it.  Remington use to make them in their 700, and that is what I have, but I think they now are only making the 17Rem Fireball.  I can't speak to the factory ammo, as I can't remember the last time I bought any, for any caliber.  I reload for my 17 using Berger 25grain and either Varget or H-322.

I believe you can.  CZ also makes a fine rifle in .17Rem.

Still pretty hot around here.  Normally I wouldn't be out until the very end of Sep or the first of Oct.  It's just that I been laid up so long with this darn surgery that I'm going buggy.
