Got my Mueller APV mounted today on my Savage 93 22magnum using Burris XTR med rings.   I changed the stock from the synthetic stock to a Boyds nutmeg thumbhole  I'm very happy with it.  Now I need to find the time to sight it in.

Have you had any problems with failure to feed?  The magazine that came with mine was junk.  I now hear Savage has had problems with their detachable magazines for the .22 mag and .17HMR.

BTW, nice lookin stock.

Sweet !! I'll bet it shoots as good as it looks too.  :congrats:

Like Semp said rim fire mags can be finicky. If you experience a failure to feed try this trick... Load the cartridges in the mag with the first cartridge all the way to the back of the mag. Then load the second cartridge with it's rim in front of the first cartridge rim, the third in front of the second and so forth.

Sometimes a cartridge will miss feed because the mag follower tries to push the front of the cartridge at too much of an upward angle. This can cause the cartridge rim to bind if the rim is behind the next one in the mag. When the bolt is cycled it can not catch the back of the cartridge because it's rim is jammed below the mag's feed lips. Keeping the mags clean inside also helps.

This may help explain it a little more...

Thanks for that tip, Chet!    I will definitely try that.

Semp,
I hope it helps ya', my friend.

sims5, was your Boyds stock a finished drop in?  Or did it take a bunch of whittling to get the iron to fit?
I have Boyds' classic stocks on a couple of rifles, I like them but they were not drop in.

Finally had a chance to sight it in.  I chose a 50yd zero.   I'm happy with the groups especially since I was  shooting from bags on a 3x3 card table that isn't totally wobble free.

Not sure what I'll be shooting.  Might be what I use if I end up in WV doing a coyote night hunt, since your limited to .22 cal or less at night.

I would suggest a 40 gr HP bullet rather than the 30 gr.

sims5

I had some 45gr Dynapoints and they grouped about the same.  I'm kinda a fan of the V-Max.  Why would you suggest a 40gr HP?

I use a 40 gr fn in my 22 mag. I cary my 22 on the tracter with me. I have stract it out to 85 yaers. And have had good luck with it so far.

Just my $.02, but I think a heavier bullet is better on coyote sized game when using a rim fire.   The V Max is a fast, light and accurate round but it is better suited for small game rather than coyotes.  Some people hunt coyotes with a .17HMR but I wouldn't recommend that round either.

With the lighter bullets, you will get more runners me thinks.

As always, YMMV.

Nice looking rig! I love them thumbholes and she looks to be a shooter!

FWIW  - me think Semps right.  We use the 22mag here on the fox and bobcat and have less runners with the heavier bullets. The centerfires are not legal for us in Georgia on these two critters. The heavier bullets seems to be more forgiving on shot placement too, especially when we have kids doing the shooting for us

What brand of heavier Hollow Points would you guys suggest?

I also use the heaviest bullets I can find that group well. More weight means more energy at the other end and that is something you want.

I use the Remington 40gr PSP and they group well but not the best in my Marlin 22mag. I had some 32gr remington V-max and they grouped about the best out of my rifle.

We shot a lot of the CCI Maxi - Mag HP's in the 40 grains forever and liked them. The last I purchased was a CCI Game Point in 40 grain. I couldn't find the regulars and we were out so I thought we'd give these bullets a try. I think I like them better than the hollow points. We've taken a couple of foxes and  one bobcat with them already. Both foxes were around fifty yards and had pass through shots. The cat was probably 80 - 90 yards out and it turned a flip and and eat the dirt. The bullet didn't exit it. I think these little bullets are made to get maximum penetration before exploding. Alot like some of the big game bullets. Try some of them if you get a chance ...
