Can you re-rifle your rifle if is pretty much shot smooth??? it kinda sounds like a dumb qustion

slagmaker

Simply but, NO.

It would be possible to have rifiling put back into the bore but it would change the diameter of the bore. That would make it of a diffrent caliber than you started with. There would also be the problem of needing to reheat treat the barrell and that would be detremental to the barrel over the long run.

Best thing to do.... re barrel.

Need more info tho of what exectally you are trying to do......
Don't bring shame to our sport.

He died for dipshits too.

What are ya calling shot smooth too? The rifling in a barrel isnt all THAT deep to begin with.
What are you comparing it to, because if it's as bad as you describe, all accuracy would go right out the window with the gun.

You would be surprised what a good cleaning will do.

I think there are several answers to your question.

First, yes it is possible to have a barrel re-bored and re-rifled.  That is exactly what was done with the early muzzle loaders.  You would start with a big barrel with lots of excess iron and when it was shot out you took it to the friendly gunsmith, quite often a blacksmith, and had it drilled out and re-rifled.  So, yes it can be done, but it will be EXPENSIVE.

Second, if your rifle is a .22 you can have the barrel drilled out and a liner (thin tube with rifling inside) installed in your current barrel.  Less expensive than a new barrel, but usually limited to .22 barrels.

Third, if it is really shot out, you can get the barrel replaced.  This can be not all that expensive to very expensive.  Not all that expensive is when you can find a gunsmith that is building better shooting rifles.  He will remove the current barrel, quite often a new factory barrel, and install a custom barrel.  Since he has nothing in the barrel you end up paying for his time and also something for the barrel that is his.  The last option is to have a custom barrel installed which will vary in price depending on the quality of the barrel you want.

Last, I would check the barrel.  If you have been shooting lead bullets in it you might have one major fowled barrel that can be cleaned up.  It it is truly shot smooth after years of shooting or shooting LOTS of rounds you need to look to the above.

I have used Sweets on copper, but never tried it on lead build up.  You do want to follow the directions that come with Sweets and not let it soak for longer than recommended.  It is some pretty strong stuff.
