RYE, N.Y. (AP) â€" Police say a 6-year-old girl was scratched and bitten by a pair of coyotes who charged her as she played with friends in the front yard of her suburban New York City home.

The girl was treated and released from the hospital. She had bites on her shoulder, thigh and possibly on one ear. Her back had been scratched.

Police in the Westchester County city of Rye, about 30 miles northeast of Manhattan, said Saturday that they were searching for the coyotes.

Police Commissioner William Connors says they believe the animals may be rabid, given that coyotes rarely attack humans.

Connors didn't identify the girl or say where she lived. He says the girl's mother scared off the pair of coyotes.

The attack happened about 9:15 p.m. Friday.

It seems like we are hearing more stories of coyotes attacking humans near the bigger cities
Could it be the coyotes are getting a custom to people and feel less threatened

  My favorite thing to do  .  I disagree .  We haven't depleted their living area as they adapt to about anything .  The problem lies in the inability of people to realize that animals are just that, animals.  We've been so inundated with Disney and others talking animals that are sweet and innocent.  When the truth is that in the days gone by everyone knew that any animal could and would hurt you.  I got's me a notion that the little girl went up to the nice puppy with her hand out .

This is getting to be a  pretty common incident, The Coyotes  are adapting to suburban life and showing less fear to man, a small child is just another meal to them and with all the PETA arseholes telling people how sweet these animals are we will probably see a lot more in the future .  cc

We haven't depleted their living area as they adapt to about anything . 

They might adapt to about anything but that doesnt mean we arent depleting their living quarters. 25 years ago there were even fewer reports of Coyote attacks on humans. And they will get closer and closer together as time goes on, as humans build more malls, more residential neighborhoods, more industry.

That land has to come from somewhere. Non of these things are suspended in midair, and not very often at all do they bulldoze a neighborhood in, to break ground for a new multimillion dollar mall, or factory. They continue to use up land inhabited by man. Which in turn pushes the wildlife into new areas. And at such a rapid pace that more times then not it's straight into populated cities, towns and villages.

Thats where they overcome and adapt, and because they are being forced to. Yeah they can adapt to almost any living environment, but they can't reason and I'm doubting they just get tired of eating rabbits and discuss heading into East LA for some human sufley. They are being pushed into populated areas.

Well, I have to disagree as well because as I see it it's the coyote that is encroaching on us.    At least here in the East. 25 years ago you never heard of coyotes in the area & 10 years ago people though you were nucking futs for hunting 'em cause "there ain't none around." 
Today it's totally different. There isn't a farmer you talk to who doesn't hear 'em howling & seen 'em running across their fields at one time or another.

They're coyotes & they'll prey on anything that isn't able to eat them!

There have been 85 children killed by HUNGRY coyotes since 1980.All who were killed were under five years of age. Most of these attacks have occured where trapping has been stopped or curtailed in some way. I lost count of simple attacks long ago, too many to keep up with !!

Add the low fur markets and trapping is not keeping up with a large surplus of wildlife that could be used in some way. So the ENCROACHMENT is actually a two way street. We are all running out of room. Get these populations of animals back under some sense of control and much of this will stop. If not guy's like Keekee are going to make a very good living just about anywhere in the U.S. Jimmie

Holy Smoke! Where did you get these stats at? I always heard there weren't any deaths from coyotes until about the 1990s.
That there is enough to get any Dad or Granddad on the war path. 

I'm w/ ya too Jimmie about the trapping. Whether from laws or the low fur prices, the lack of trapping isn't good.

First was a little girl in LA sitting on her front porch eating a cookie. I think she was just 3 at the time. It was in 1980, just four years after California banned trapping. Most of them have been in Arizona,and california .Exactly four years after banning trapping in 96. Massachussettes had it's first attack on a child and as far as I know there are no deaths attributed to coyotes there yet , but a fair number of attacks on children and people walking their pets since that time.

I used to have all the websites Vic. But I have had a few too many crashes since I last checked the stats about four years ago. You may be able to find a link to the latest stats at the USDA website. I got heavily involved in trying to help folks turn things around in their states early in this deade and got burned out after a couple of years. SEEMED LIKE THERE WAS ALWAYS A NEW ATTACK HAPPENING AND ANOTHER CHILD MAMED FOR LIFE , every few weeks.

The one that really got to me was the attack on a baby in it's living room while dad was unloading groceries from the car. The damned thing walked in the house and took the child off the couch!! It seems there was an old couple feeding the animal they killed just a few doors down. They thought it was neat to have a coyote coming to their call for food.  That was march 2004 in Mesa Arizona.
