Coons climbing cedar trees part II: mystery solved?

In January I posted pics of big cedar trees with bark scratched up by coons climbing them so much.  My 13 year old grandson figured out that each scratched up cedar has a large maple tree close enough for the coon to cross limbs to the maple.  He climbed up 40-50 feet in one of the big cedars and saw a hole in a big maple tree next to it with easy access from the cedar tree via limbs.  His theory is that the coons prefer to climb the softer cedar bark, so go up and down via the cedars but live in the maples. 

I was wrong about no den trees, because some of the big maples do have holes in them up high.

We called a coon out of a hole in one of the maples when I was visiting there last week.

That's cool he figured that out. He's gonna make a fine woodsman.

He must have a pretty good Grampa teaching him a thing or two.

Yes, we played Brawling Bandits, a Minaska sound. Thanks for the video showing us how! It's a no shooting area near their house and it was too dusky dark to get a pic.  Grandson Cody saw the critter so it was extra good.  We also called out a homeowner from a house across the wooded creek ravine.   We shut off the sound, sneaked out with our call and giggled all the way home while he stumbled around with a spotlight in the steep brushy creek bottom.

I've been on the road for 12 days, out of internet access more than I expected.  Pecking on a small netbook keyboard this morning.  Will stop by home long enough today to pick up clean clothes.

The grandsons have had a ball with the trail cam I got them after Christmas.  They send pics of coons and deer, and are learning all the time. We talk by phone of best places to set it up, etc. I think they will make some kind of science project for their home school co-op group with it.  Best toy I ever got them.
