I got tired of cutting a lanyard grove in the horns so after talking with a friend that tests out a lot of my calls, we came up with this.

I like how everyone is being honest and not holding back on critisisms now.  So let me here it.

Do you like this or would you like to have a grove.  Or anything else you might see.  That old ruler is 12 inches.
The winding and lanyard are all one piece.  Wound up and back out.

This one is for sale here but I wanted to get everyone's opinions.  Remember, be honest.

I personaly think the winding looks great! But will it hold up and stay in place?

I would  prefer a few more curves on the distress call but I do like it.

It has a beautiful "new" to it Matt.
Just one concern...with the horn being tapered, and no groove...is the winding going to slip upwards during hot and cold contractions?

I did file a bunch of grooves in the horn before winding.  But the way it is wound and sealed, it shouldn't come off.  I drilled a small hole at the beginning (near the board) and wound it up the horn.  So thearetically, it should work.  But this is the first one that I finished all the way and it is currently sitting in the freezer right now.  It will come out and get spun around my head a bunch and go in front of the heater.  I will do that several times before I feel to comfortable.

Dang, that's product testing.  :sneer: Could we get a video of this process?  :innocentwhistle: No...I;m kidding

Let us know how she goes.

That's interesting. If it will hold tight to the horn as expected it might be neat as an either/or option. Looks like it might make a good place to grab the horn as well.

The general preference is a shorter horn I've noticed, but I don't think I would have cut those clouds off the top of that one either.

The winding looks good to me. Its not new though. I have a buffalo horn howler made by Dave Dunbar(critterbuster game calls) with a leather wrap like that.
The open reed looks good too, it has a nice clean look to it.

I have never understood why we put lanyards on howlers?   Does anyone really wear one around their neck?

I think what might be interesting is to have some kind of attachment at the front so you could sling it over your shoulder like a powder horn.

Anyway, it is still a neat idea.  Pretty horn too.

Aaron, I have never seen this done before on howlers.  I have seen it on powder horns.  Thanks for pointing that out.

Al,  One of the first howlers I've done had a lanyard going from end to end.  I really liked it for the same reason you were talking about.  I may start doing that again.  I was a lot more comfortable to where.

Thanks
