Need advice re which choke for buckshot, for deer, in a Mossberg Maverick pump 3 inch 12 gauge.

I plan to try some Federal 00 buck because people claim that its plastic sleeve holds a tighter pattern farther.  What choke should I use for the 00 buck?  I have modified cylinder and full choke screw-in choke tubes.  If I change the barrel to the short 18 ½, it is straight bore with no choke and no threads to screw in a choke.  I'm thinking the improved cylinder for buckshot but don't know.

What choke should I use for slugs?

If I go to #4 buck, what choke?

How about a rifled choke for slug shooting?

Nasty, you keep talking me into buying more stuff!   Thank you for all the new info... I think!  :wo:

I will shoot a few slugs through the improved cylinder to see what it will do, but will probably buy the Carlson's rifled choke tube.  Looks like I can get it for $37 on Amazon.

I will try some buckshot also before buying another specialty choke.  That boar blaster buckshot choke is expensive, $57 is the lowest price I found.  I can probably get a take-off rifled barrel for 75-80.

I have part way built a tree stand in thick brush that overlooks a skinny semi-clearing ravine that is loaded with deer trails and sign, and has shots to about 40 yards from the selected tree.  I plan to be done with any cutting of shooting lanes or work on the stand by early June and leave it alone till opening morning of deer season in October.   Didn't even cut a trail to this stand though I don't think anyone would find it.

I am full of ideas as long as it's not my money ha ha  :innocentwhistle:. I have a Polychoke 2 that I bought years ago and really like.  I just recently found out they are out of business but you should be able to pick one up on eBay or stores maybe if you look at it I always like mine.
Just a suggestion I would get one of those life-size cardboard deer targets  and take it out to where your stand is going to be in the trail and set it right up exactly where you think you might shoot and then shoot from your stand using the different chokes and buckshot and see exactly what will happen at that range and then go with the best one from there.  I am no expert for sure but I think a tighter choke makes tighter patterns with buckshot and a cylinder or improved cylinder is best for a smoothbore slug barrel.  Some people seem to have pretty good luck with rifled chokes.  I would be interested to see what results you come up with in either case sir!
