Server Trouble

Having some issues getting on and navigating today?

Our server is under a dos attack...should be able to track it down and clear it up shortly. Sorry for the inconvenience.

DOS is Denial Of Service Attack.

It's where some freak sends millions and millions of hits randomly and rapidly to the server all at once and for extended periods of times. They are designed to literally crash a server since it would be impossible for it to withstand that kind of useless traffic impact.

We have things in place to prevent this, but it's like a virus, there are new ones made everyday, and it'll take something a helluva lot bigger then whatever that peon was doing to crumble this server.

I was wondering if it was on my end. I tried getting on this morning, and the page was white and said " Connection Problems. Sorry, SMF was unable to connect to the database. This may be caused by server being busy. " Which ment nothing to me.

Then I tried again, and it let me sign on, then I would try to open a topic, then the page would come up again......... Glad it works now.

I thought when it said "SMF" it ment "Some Mother Fu***r" was unable to connect

SMF is actually the name of the software used to run run this show. It feeds data to the database all day long while you guys are prowling around in here, and then when you want to search something it's there, keeps track of how many members we have, who posts what, how many replies a topic has...basically everything.
