I have a farmer that said the coyotes are getting a little too close for his liking to the sheep barn. They are now within 250yds. So I'm wondering,,, do you think the pups are responding to distress with Ma & Pa?? If so,, I think shooting a couple of them would help eliminate the need for a bigger meal by the parent dogs. I have to at least show up & try for this farmer. I'm hoping the young ones tag along as I really don't want to shoot the adults just yet.

Not sure? It depends on how big the pups are now in your area and when they were born. Is the farmer seeing the pups with the adults?

Pup distress will work at just about any time of the year, now is no different. They may not be staying close the the sheep farm anyway, Coyotes will travel a good ways to get to a good food source if needed.

For control purposes you better off shooting the adults than the pups anyway. I don't want to get into to much of this on the open board but I will be happy to give you my thoughts threw private message or email.

Thanks for the reply Brent. I didn't catch if the pups were with them or not. I'll have to ask. I think right now they are just travelling the fence row along the hayfields. From what I gathered he hasn't seen them in the pasture yet. I'll talk to him more hopefully this weekend & try to get him to be more specific. Thanks for the quick reply.

Well from my experience or opinion, I don't think the pups will be very far from the playground and more than likely are not traveling too far with the adults.

This time of the year the pups will readily tell you where the playground is and in my area it's more than likely in the back corner of some cornfield close to hay or pasture ground and also close to water. With the big equipment now being used by the farmers, they have a hard time working the corners and it's real common to have bare ground in the corners which make great areas to play. Find the playgrounds and your going to get some action as long as you get reasonably close. Lip squeaks and bulb type squeakers will bring a pup or two out in the open, but they ain't coming far.

If your too far away from the playground and you try to call adults with howls and pup distress they will head for the playground to check on and protect the pups and they won't come to the call. Get in their face and do the same they will be in your lap in a couple of minutes, maybe sooner!

IMHO

Edit:  BTW, I'm talking today, 5 or 6 weeks from now you have the potential to get the whole 9 yards coming at once!

THO Game Calls

If he is seeing them at 250 yards, why not just set up an ambush and forget about calling them.  This is control work really, so just get up high and let nature take it's course.  If they show up, snipe them.

As for the adults, food is pretty abundant right now, so if they have their minds set on the sheep, the amount of pups they have isn't going to make a difference.  Once they get in the habbit of killing them, they wont stop until they are stopped.

I think pups learn from the parents.  So if you were to take out a couple pups, and leave a couple, it would not make a difference.  The remaining pups will learn that sheep are an easy meal.  Take out the adults and the pup will have to learn on their own.  Sad situation, but at this point, I thinkthe pups have a 40 -60 percent chance of surviving with out the parents.  Maybe less, but if it was a good spot, other coyotes will move in soon enough.  You wont deplete your numbers by taking them out and you might get some other places to hunt from the farmer you helped out.

Just my opinion.

Seriously, and this is one thing I'd never post on Pink Frog's board, if you don't have a tolling dog it can pay off if you can do a decent rendition of a  dog barking. How do you apply that to a setup?

Bills Custom Calls

Hamer I would have to spin a snazy call or 3 to bring with I don't have any just hanging around.

Greenside most of my calling is trail and error  mostly error  I believe there is no right or wrong way to call a coyote just some ways are better then others

I have already just mouth barked and stopped a coyote in its tracks  didn't get a shot because I was in the pickup driving down the road and I hit the skids to watch the coyote fer a few        just had to try it

:wo:,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,Uhm,,, I'm guessing the barking would precede some puppy whines or kiyi's.

Now you're on the right track. Not necessarily preceding but used in conjunction with pup ki-yi's. Your partner setting some distance from you ,doing the barking , and you do some ki-yi.  Doesn't have to be long duration, just enough to let them know there is a dog involved. Will call adults and older juveniles. If your not good at voice or barking on open reeds, record your little ankle biter on your computer and download to your Big Country. The key is to get in close proximity to the pups. Just another trick that will help someone to be able to say that he can shoot a coyote on any given day of the year.  Not a beginner or coyote 101 technique and maybe shouldn't be posted on beginner boards, if you catch my drift.  :doh2:
