Here are some pics of a call I am just finishing up, so far it is by far the nicest call I have yet to build. I got a end piece of a juniper log cut some 15 to 20 years ago by my bow builder friend, they use the juniper for laments in the bow limbs, I say it works great for calls!

I squared it up on a table saw, I was hoping to get more stock out of it, but as I squared it up the outside edges were real buggey, there were lots of worm holes so I ended up with only one blank about 1 1/2 feet long out of it :argh:

I have yet to decide what tone board to put in it, another coat of wax or two then I will have to decide
Thanks for lookin

Isn't that nice stuff to use? One of my favorites to turn calls out of is juniper from my own back yard.

That one you made turned out super nice.

I still have some banks in my basement I may have to go through and play with.

ohh man Brad ,,it was so nice! After working with hardwood this stuff was great, smells good, sands great,,I am thinking I will grab up my chain saw and head east,,juniper is scarce over here but i know some places that I could do a little logging over towards you,, :yoyo:

Beautiful call  :highclap: If you want more of that juniper you need to come to Tennesse. We call it cedar here, can't remember the date but a traveling minister came through Lebanon TN (horse & Buggy days) came across a large stand of junipers and thought they were cedars and named it "Cedars of Lebanon" it's a state park now. So I guess folks around here just keep calling them cedar.

The juniper here is a bit different then  cedar trees, similar wood, different tree,,,junipers here are kinda scraggy looking, almost like a small pine,,or hedge type bush, just over the mountains in Idaho they have huge cedar trees that get logged. The juniper I have seen in Montana don't get much bigger around then the piece I cut up.

like the wood and finish, just dont know about how thin the exhast end is. i'v  gotten a call that has a thing exhasty end and it you want to cup the call its kind of sharp. i guess i'm trying to say i'd  like a little more wood around the exhaust but thats only me.

The exhaust was the one thing I was unhappy with when I finished it, I wish i would have flared it a bit and left it thicker,,,next time I guess :doh2:

That is great looking wood and the knot adds a little extra to it.  I have a Cedar call that has a similar knot and I was afraid that it might crack or check in that area, but I haven't had any problems, so keep turning.

I agree with Al, I love the wormholes. I got a bunch of cedar in the kiln right now. I can't wait to get it back. It is real nice to work with.
