Some more open reeds to share

Here are a few more open reeds that I have finished lately.

These first two have a one piece acrylic band/sleeve that runs the entire length of the call.  And the bodies are a stabilized burl.


Blue pearl acrylic with a blue box elder burl body


Black pearl acrylic with a red maple burl body


This is what they look like before I glue the body to the sleeve/band.



I didn't bell out the exhaust ends on these two like I normally do, cause I was just trying something different.  The call on the left was the stippled call from last time.




And since I seemed to have found an admirer of my stippled calls, i Totally Tried a new spin on the stippling.

I can only add to what the others have already said.....those are some awesome calls....but that bottom one is just unreal!! Explain what stipple is. Are those rings you added in there? Are they wood or metal? Did you do it with a wood burner?

Mark, here's a definition of stippling that I got from Wikipedia:
"The term stipple can also apply to a random pattern of small depressions applied to a surface to increase the friction and make the surface easier to grip. This process is similar to knurling or checkering, but is often used on complex curved surfaces, such as anatomical grips, where a regular pattern would not fit. Stippling can be cast into plastic objects, or applied with a hammer and punch to wood or metal objects."

I use a little dremmel diamond point bit and just barely touch the tip to the wood and it creates a little dimple in the wood.

The dark lines are just burn lines with a wire.  To make those, just cut a small groove in the call as it is turning, and hold a wire down into the groove.  After a few minutes, the wood will heat up from friction and darken up.  The other darkened areas in the stippling was done with a micro torch.  I tried to get the flame size as small as possible, and just catch the tips of the stippling area to darken them for some contrast.
